Kremlin official Dmitry Peskov commented during a briefing on accusations by Latvian MEP Tatyana Zhdanok of spying for Russia.

According to the Russian president’s press secretary, accusing Zhdanok of espionage is a “witch hunt.”

“This is a witch hunt. Remember, there was McCarthyism in the USA. This is the same. We strongly condemn this. This does not correspond to any ideals that prevail in Europe, the so-called ideals of democracy,” Peskov explained.

Formerly national Latvian radio LRT reportedTatyana Zhdanok, a member of the European Parliament and co-chair of the Latvian Russian Union party, is accused of spying for Russia. According to the radio station, Zhdanok met with FSB officers in Moscow and Brussels and served as a Russian spy for many years.

Also the Cyprus Court denied Extradition of Russian Artur Petrov at the request of the United States.
