Aleksey Pushkov, Chairman of the Federation Council’s Commission on Information Policy and Interaction with the Media, believes that the goal of enlarging the European Union (EU) is to create a “unified foreign policy system” that will depend on Brussels and Washington. “The accession of new countries to the EU means above all giving up their sovereignty and independence in the field of foreign policy. From a parliamentary, global geopolitical standpoint, this is precisely what EU enlargement means – in the creation of a unified foreign policy zone subordinate to Brussels and Washington,” wrote the parliamentarian.

Pushkov warned that the creation of such a foreign policy system would have serious consequences. According to him, politicians who defend the national interests of their countries will be excluded from the ruling circles. The parliamentarian believes that states joining the EU will lose the opportunity to choose their own political course.
