Madrid Hosts XII Platino Awards: A Star-Studded Night
IFEMA’s Palacio Municipal in Madrid hosted the XII Platino Awards, a ceremony that began with a long photocall where most nominees mingled alongside a wave of influencers and celebrities, including Dulceida and actress Karla Sofía Gascón.
Gascón joked about a moment from a recent Leganés Stars event, recalling a playful clash when trying to reclaim the ball left a rival on the ground for several minutes. She quipped that if she were not an actress she would be a footballer.
The gala was hosted by Aislinn Derbez and Asier Etxeandia. Etxeandia admitted he had just met his cohost and had fallen for her, hoping the night would stay lively and dynamic, with a few surprises. He teased that there would be very special performances, including one of his own.
The red carpet united filmmakers and journalists alike, with a chorus of accents that underscored the celebration’s aim: to honor the most notable Iberian American productions and creators from 23 countries.
The evening opened with a flamenco performance, then the awards began in earnest. The first prize went to a debut film, The Dog Thief, as Vinko Tomicic stepped forward to deliver a speech against discrimination.
The Platino for Best Iberian American Fiction Comedy went to Buscando a Coque, a Spanish entry that drew attention for its humor and storytelling. The film’s win reflected a broader trend toward cross-border collaborations within the region.
The night also highlighted Mariposas Negras as the Best Animated Feature, and Carmen Maura earned Best Female Performance in a Series for Tierra de Mujeres, while Candela Peña was honored for El Caso Asunta. Paz Vega collected the award on Maura’s behalf, demonstrating the shared spirit of the evening.
In another notable category, La Infiltrada was recognized for its screenplay, with Arantxa Echevarría and Amèlia Mora receiving the Platino. Victoria Lammers was honored for Best Editing on La Infiltrada, and Edu Grau earned Best Cinematography for La Habitación de al Lado. The Best Sound went to a team for Segundo Premio, and Alberto Iglesias took Best Original Music for La habitación de al lado.
Additionally, the prize for Best Miniseries or Teleserie Iberoamericana went to Cien años de soledad, the adaptation available on streaming that swept several categories, while the night also celebrated the film Aún estoy aquí with multiple wins in major categories.
The closing moments featured remarks by the Madrid regional president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, who highlighted the pride of the region in hosting a gathering of Iberian American cinema and emphasized the cultural bonds across the Atlantic.
All the winners were celebrated in the end with a sense of unity across languages and borders, a testament to a festival that values productions and creators from all over the Ibero‑American world.
