Guardamar del Segura will host a national chess weekend from April 26 to 28 as Chess School Club Dama de Guardamar was chosen to organize the IX Spanish Schools Chess Championship. The selection underscores a surge in chess activity across Alicante, where regular tournaments and even chess being taught in schools have helped make the game a healthy, educational pursuit for young people.
The event, a prestigious chess festival, will be hosted in Guardamar and is led by the Spanish Chess Federation and the Valencian Chess Federation. Both bodies are supported by and cooperate closely with the Dama de Guardamar club, which has promoted a circuit of state-level events touring Alicante during this period.
The latest stop on the Promochess tour in the region occurred in Monforte del Cid.
The talent of all Spain
The tournament will take place at Hostel Costablanca Explore in Guardamar and is expected to bring together rising players from across the country. Organizers emphasize that the event reflects Guardamar del Segura’s commitment to developing and supporting chess within the school environment.
<pAdditionally, the Dama de Guardamar Chess School Club announced a calendar adjustment: the V Open Internacional Memorial José Manuel Hernández Ortiz has been moved to Sunday, April 14, to align with the national championship celebrations. This change allows participants and fans to enjoy both major chess events without conflict.
The Dama de Guardamar Chess School Club, based in Guardamar, serves as the official sponsor of the Esphouses real estate and development projects, with ongoing support from the Guardamar City Council. The tournament’s importance to the national chess calendar and its significance for the local population are highlighted by organizers.
Turning point
The organizers also commend the tireless work of club members who contributed to this achievement. The event marks a new milestone for Guardamar del Segura within the Build a Guardamar Olympic Chess Village initiative. It reaffirms the city’s devotion to chess and its vital role in promoting the discipline among young people.
