Nada fue igual in the family from March 19. That day, Grandpa Pepe, 71 and suffering from sleep apnea, fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into the entrance of a tunnel on the Loja to Huétor Tájar road in Granada. He was taking his wife, his daughter, and his two grandchildren. The two women died. On the night from Sunday to Monday, two months later, the grandfather locked himself with his grandchildren and killed them before shooting himself with his shotgun.
Desde aquellos días de marzo, el abuelo sufría una depresión. Vivía en el segundo piso de la casa familiar. En el primero quedaban sus nietos y su yerno, viudo, que según los testimonios recogidos por la Guardia Civil, no podía evitar, en ocasiones, culpar al anciano de la muerte de su esposa.
From those days in March, the grandfather endured severe depression. He lived on the second floor of the family home. On the first floor remained his grandchildren and the widowed son-in-law, who, according to testimonies gathered by the Civil Guard, sometimes found it impossible not to blame the elder for his wife’s death.
Desde aquellos días, el yerno no dejaba que el abuelo disfrutara de mucho tiempo con sus nietos. “Apenas los buenos días y las buenas noches”, han contado personas de su entorno a los investigadores.
Since those days, the son-in-law kept the grandfather from spending much time with the grandchildren. “Barely good mornings and good nights,” people close to the case told investigators.
Escopeta de caza
Los agentes están reconstruyendo lo que ocurrió en la casa familiar la noche del domingo. Los datos que han recabado hasta ahora indican que el abuelo Pepe le reprochó una vez más a su yerno que no le dejara pasar más tiempo con sus nietos. Enfurecido, bajó al primer piso con su escopeta de cazador, calibre 12. Apuntó con el arma directamente a su yerno, que salió huyendo de la casa y llamó a los servicios de emergencia. Eran las once menos veinte de la noche.
The investigators are piecing together what happened at the family home on Sunday night. The information collected so far suggests Grandpa Pepe once again scolded his son-in-law for not letting him spend more time with the grandchildren. Furious, he went downstairs to the first floor with his 12-gauge hunting shotgun, pointing it straight at his son-in-law, who fled the house and called emergency services. It was just before 11:20 p.m.
Un niño escayolado
El anciano se llevó entonces a los dos niños, de 10 y 13 años, al piso de arriba, donde él vive. El niño mayor aun lleva escayola en una pierna por el accidente de tráfico del mes de marzo. El abuelo se asoma entonces al balcón y pega dos tiros de escopeta al aire.
The old man then took the two children, aged 10 and 13, to the upstairs flat where he resides. The elder still has a leg in a cast from the March traffic accident. He then peeks out from the balcony and fires two shotgun rounds into the air.
Poco después llegan a la zona los primeros guardias civiles. El abuelo Pepe se niega a salir, no pide nada, solo que se vayan y le dejen con sus nietos. Tiene tres teléfonos con él -dos móviles y uno fijo-.
A short time later, the first Civil Guard officers arrive. Grandpa Pepe refuses to come out, asks for nothing, only that they leave and let him stay with his grandchildren. He has three phones with him — two mobiles and a landline.
Los guardias civiles se entrevistan con el yerno, padre de los niños. El hombre les dice que el anciano quiere a sus nietos, cree que quiere hacerle daño a él, nunca a los críos. Antes de las once de la noche, el padre de los chavales recibe una llamada desde un teléfono del abuelo. Es su hijo mayor. Va a ser la última vez que hable con él.
Civil guards interview the son-in-law, the children’s father. He tells them that the grandfather loves his grandchildren and believes the elder intends to harm him, never the kids. Before 11 p.m., the father receives a call from one of the grandfather’s phones. It is his oldest son. It will be the last conversation he has with him.
“Papa, can I stay the night with grandpa?”

El hombre intenta ganar tiempo para recuperar a sus hijos.
The man tries to buy time to reclaim his children.
“You can, but first I want you to see a doctor, to check how your leg is doing.”

Alguien corta la comunicación. Los investigadores creen que es el abuelo. La voz del nieto mayor ha sonado tranquila. Del pequeño, Guillermo, no se sabe nada. La casa queda en silencio. De vez en cuando, el abuelo sale a la ventana.
Someone cuts the line. Investigators believe it was the grandfather. The elder grandson’s voice sounds calm. Nothing is known about the younger, Guillermo. The house falls quiet. Occasionally the grandfather appears at the window.
“Luego hablo con vosotros”
Hacia las tres de la mañana llegan desde Madrid agentes de la Unidad Especial de Intervención, especialistas en rescates de rehenes. El abuelo insiste en que no quiere hablar con nadie y pide que se vayan. Anuncia que hablará con los guardias más tarde, por la mañana, después, dice, de vestir a los niños y que vayan al colegio.
Around 3 a.m., Madrid-based officers from the Special Intervention Unit arrive, experts in hostage rescues. The grandfather insists he does not want to speak with anyone and asks them to leave. He announces that he will talk to the guards later, in the morning, after dressing the children and sending them to school.
Otra vez el silencio. Pasadas las ocho y veinte de la mañana los guardias civiles deciden entrar en la casa. Lanzan varias granadas aturdidoras. Encuentran al abuelo Pepe en el cuarto de baño. Se ha pegado un tiro con su escopeta. En una habitación está el nieto mayor, que tiene otro disparo letal en el cuerpo. Y en otro dormitorio, encuentran al pequeño, Guillermo. Su abuelo lo había asfixiado.
Silence returns. By a little after 8:20 a.m., the Civil Guards decide to enter the home. They deploy several stun grenades. They find Grandpa Pepe in the bathroom, having shot himself with his shotgun. In one room lies the elder grandson, with a fatal gunshot wound. In another bedroom they discover the younger, Guillermo. The grandfather had suffocated him.
A falta de los resultados de las autopsias, los investigadores creen que el abuelo mató a sus nietos hacia las once de la noche, poco después de la llamada del mayor al padre pidiéndole permiso para dormir con él. Piensan, además, que el abuelo se disparó ya de madrugada, después de su última conversación con los negociadores.
In the absence of autopsy results, investigators believe the grandfather killed his grandchildren around 11 p.m., shortly after the elder’s call to the father asking to sleep with him. They also think the grandfather shot himself in the early hours, following his final exchange with the negotiators.
