The Iberdrola group contributes to the economy in the Valencian Community, with an impact of 873 million euros reported during its general assembly. The company highlighted a financial impact of 345 million euros for the previous year and disclosed investments of 244 million euros in the autonomous regions, alongside acquisitions and contracts totaling 182 million euros that supported 430 providers. The firm directly employs about 1,500 workers in the area.
Investments in Castalla and La Vila are part of the plan. The group’s distribution subsidiary, SDI, aims to invest 477 million euros in smart networks across the Community of Valencia from 2022 through 2024 as part of the decarbonisation effort. These networks are designed to better integrate renewable energy, enable sustainable mobility, support smart cities, and promote self-consumption, while empowering consumers with greater decision-making and connectivity.
Between 2022 and 2024 Iberdrola will expand electricity grid investments in the Community by 30 percent
Key actions include new substations in Castalla and Vila Joiosa, expansion of conversion facilities in Monserrat, Sanxo Llop (Gandia), Boveral (Vinaròs) and Peñíscola, as well as expansions in Alcúdia, Betxí, and Rambleta (La Vall d’Uixó). There will also be infrastructure renewals and capacity increases. i-DE has digitized the regional electricity networks, converting more than 3.5 million meters and installing smart meters with remote management and automation capabilities. The company oversees over 68,000 kilometers of low and medium voltage lines and more than 3,400 kilometers of high and very high voltage lines, along with 25,000 conversion centers and 177 primary and secondary substations in service.
Renewable energy
Iberdrola plans to accelerate its deployment of renewable projects, electricity mobility, and self-consumption to speed up the energy transition. The company already manages more than 2,000 megawatts of installed renewable capacity in the region, with hydroelectric facilities and notable installations such as the La Muela pumping station, a standout as Europe’s largest energy storage facility. The expansion includes three photovoltaic projects totaling 450 MW and an expected investment of around 230 million euros, creating about 1,500 construction jobs.
Further, the firm is tailoring solutions to diverse sectors such as transportation, air conditioning, and industry. A notable collaboration with Volkswagen will establish a renewable energy supply and a battery factory in Sagunto, with investments of 500 million euros to meet the facility’s energy needs, partly through self-consumption.
Additionally, Iberdrola is advancing green hydrogen initiatives and plans to build two hydroelectric stations in Alicante and Valencia to support a more sustainable heavy-duty transport future.
Iberdrola inaugurates Southern Europe’s largest fast-charging hub for electric vehicles in Elche
In the electric mobility sector, Iberdrola continues installing and operating charging points powered entirely by renewable sources. The company has more than 600 public access points in the Community, all accessible through the Iberdrola Public Recharge app, which enables geolocation, booking, and payment. A partnership with Marcos Group will further expand the number of charging stations and provide charging solutions for new EV users.
Among the major facilities, the Elche hub stands out as Southern Europe’s largest ultra-fast charging center, expanding coverage in the Community and supporting the new station already active in Ondara, with additional sites planned in Alberic (Valencia) and Les Alqueries (Castellón).
Participation and shareholder engagement
Iberdrola is developing a more participatory, accessible, sustainable, and innovative governance approach this year. Shareholders and their representatives are encouraged to participate electronically or remotely ahead of the meeting to protect health and promote sustainability. A service point was established in Valencia at the Westin Hotel, available until Thursday, June 16, from 10:00 to 19:00, where attendees can engage, cast votes, and receive assistance, with staff on hand to help bridge the digital gap.
