The collaboration between Iberdrola and Burger King has resulted in 50 electric vehicle charging points, with 26 located in Alicante. These fast chargers, rated at 50 kW, operate around the clock and are situated in the parking areas of Burger King and Popeyes restaurants across the Valencian Community. In total, 30 charging stations are already active in Alicante and Valencia, in cities including Dénia, Elche, Finestrat, Ondara, Pilar de la Horadada, Rabasa-Alicante, Alcàsser, Cullera, Gandia, Oliva, Paiporta, Paterna, and Torrent. The rollout will continue in the coming weeks, bringing the remaining 20 charging spaces online in Alcoy, Dénia Las Marinas, and Torrevieja, along with Alzira, Manises, Ontinyent and Xàtiva in Valencia.

Users will find that these stations draw 100 percent green energy from renewable generation sources with a Guarantee of Origin certificate, ensuring that charging aligns with emissions reduction goals and clean energy standards.

Last year, the two partners signed an agreement to electrify the parking areas of nearly 400 Burger King and Popeyes restaurants operated by Restaurant Brands Iberia. Charging points can be located, monitored in real time, reserved, and paid for through Iberdrola’s General Charging App on mobile devices. The app enables geolocation of chargers, real-time status checks, and seamless payments for a convenient charging experience.

Borja Hernández de Alba, managing director of Restaurant Brands Iberia, stated that the company and Iberdrola are progressively building 400 fast and ultra-fast charging points across Burger King and Popeyes locations in Spain. This initiative would allow customers to top up their electric vehicles within 15 to 30 minutes, contributing to the broader adoption of emission-free mobility. As deployment continues, more than 200 installations are already in place, and 2022 is identified as a pivotal year for expanding this service. The project is projected to cut around 6,000 tons of CO2, yielding a positive impact on air quality comparable to planting three million trees.

Joaquín Longares, Iberdrola’s Sales Representative for the Valencia Region, emphasized that such agreements help broaden access to charging infrastructure and strengthen the convenience of emission-free travel. The alliance makes charging points easier to locate and access, turning restaurant visits into a relaxing moment for customers choosing greener mobility.

Electric mobility and green recovery

Iberdrola is advancing a sustainable mobility strategy intended to accelerate the installation of charging points for electric vehicles in the years ahead. The plan envisions more charging points installed at homes, in businesses, and along urban and main roads, with a focus on ultra-fast stations exceeding 350 kW, super-fast stations over 100 kW, and fast stations at 50 kW. This commitment underlines a broader effort to expand charging capacity across regions while providing reliable options for drivers on longer journeys.

In addition to charging networks, Iberdrola highlights the importance of solar energy development. The company notes that advancing electromobility requires coordinated action with key stakeholders, including administrations, institutions, businesses, service stations, dealerships, and manufacturers. To date, Iberdrola has finalized more than 60 distribution infrastructure agreements aimed at supporting electric vehicle adoption and reliability for users across the region.

As a pioneer in green electricity, Iberdrola joined The Climate Group’s EV100 initiative to accelerate the transition to electric fleets. The company is committed to electrifying its vehicle operations and supporting staff with cleaner travel options in Spain and the United Kingdom.

Through these efforts, Iberdrola and Burger King aim to show how a practical, well-supported charging network can help drive meaningful reductions in emissions while offering a convenient, energy-conscious experience for diners and travelers alike. The ongoing collaboration underscores the role of private-sector partnerships in advancing a more sustainable transportation future for Spain and its neighboring markets, including Canada and the United States, where similar initiatives are increasingly commonplace and connected to broader climate and energy goals.
