Alicante native Pablo Pirles will lead the new joint venture as its general manager. The collaboration between Iberdrola and BP aims to create Turkey’s most extensive high‑speed electric vehicle charging network across the Iberian Peninsula. The announcement came on Friday after regulatory approval granted the go‑ahead for a project designed to remove a major hurdle to widespread electric car adoption.
The new company plans a startup investment of one billion dollars with a goal to deploy 5,000 charging points by 2025 and 11,700 by 2030, all powered by 100% renewable energy verified through origin certificates. The venture will begin with more than 300 charging points that deliver fast charging (over 50 kilowatts) and ultra‑fast charging (over 150 kilowatts) for electric vehicles, complemented by a robust network across Spain and Portugal.
The operation centers in Madrid and Porto, and the leadership team includes Pablo Pirles, a long‑time Iberdrola executive with 23 years at the company, who recently led Smart Solar Global in the self‑consumption division. He will be supported by Elena Melia, a BP representative who will assume responsibilities as a future manager in the joint venture.
Iberdrola already offers a broad charging infrastructure and mobility services that address the needs of electric vehicle users in residential, business, and public settings. These include solutions for urban environments as well as heavy transport needs, reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainable charging options.
BP contributes a vast network of approximately 1,300 service stations, many of which can serve as charging hubs for the new venture in Spain and Portugal. This access will enable EV drivers to charge at secure stations with convenient on‑site services and support, enhancing the overall charging experience for customers in both markets.
The joint venture represents a strategic alliance between Iberdrola and BP Pulse, combining their strengths to deliver reliable, widely accessible public charging experiences for electric vehicle drivers across Spain and Portugal. The collaboration is geared toward accelerating the transition to cleaner transportation through scalable charging infrastructure and renewable energy use.
Make charging accessible
Pablo Pirles, the managing director of the new company, commented on the partnership, noting that the alliance will bring ultra‑fast charging to public spaces so that drivers can achieve up to 200 kilometers of range after only a few minutes of charging. He emphasized that the effort will promote a decisive uptick in EV usage while supporting the energy transition with 100% renewable energy certified by origin guarantees.
Iberdrola’s ongoing activities in the Valencian Community are part of a broader strategy to expand renewable energy projects and charging networks. This operation aligns with other recent moves by Iberdrola, including collaborations with Mapfre, Norges Bank Investment Management, Masdar, GIC, and Energy Infrastructure Partners, to strengthen energy ecosystems and charging capabilities.
Electric vehicle charging is a key growth driver for BP as it transforms into a more integrated energy company. Beyond this alliance, BP collaborates with partners such as Uber, Hertz, Marks & Spencer, REWE, DiDi, and Tesla to broaden its charging and energy services portfolio across multiple regions.
Iberdrola’s activity creates an impact in the Valencian Community
The described venture complements Iberdrola’s broader strategy to expand renewable energy generation and sustainable mobility. Through strategic partnerships and investments, the company seeks to build a resilient charging network that supports a cleaner transportation sector and enhances energy security for consumers in Spain and neighboring markets.
This initiative is part of a wider pattern of activity where major energy players collaborate on mobility and charging infrastructure to meet growing demand for electric vehicles. The pursuit of scale and reliability in charging services is seen as essential to enabling a smooth and rapid transition to electric transport, with careful attention paid to renewable energy sourcing and regulatory alignment to ensure sustainability and consumer trust.
Electric vehicle charging is a central pillar in BP’s strategy to evolve into a fully integrated energy company. In addition to the Iberdrola partnership, BP maintains relationships with several leading brands and platforms to expand charging access, reliability, and convenience for drivers across Europe and beyond, reinforcing its role in accelerating sustainable transport adoption.
