Mercadona expands electric vehicle charging network across Spain

Mercadona, the Valencia based supermarket group led by Juan Roig, announced on Thursday a plan to invest 21 million euros in rolling out semi fast charging points across its stores. The project is a collaboration with Iberdrola and Repsol, aiming to create a substantial charging network in Spain and southern Europe.

Valencia is the focal point for a broader rollout that could see up to 5,000 charging points installed across the chain. At present, Mercadona operates around 2,000 charging points, with roughly a hundred offering semi fast charging. The target is to upgrade existing points and steadily introduce new ones so that every store with parking can benefit by the end of 2024. The new model promises a sixfold increase in charging speed, rising from 3.7 kilowatts to 22 kilowatts.

The charging project is implemented in collaboration with Iberdrola and Repsol, managed by Iberdrola Public Recharge and Repsol Waylet for customer service and payment processing. The aim is to enable customers to plug in their electric vehicles while shopping. Transactions such as payments, locating nearby chargers, and checking availability can be done via the providers’ mobile apps, enabling a seamless experience for shoppers who use Mercadona stores.

Charging points for electric vehicles at Mercadona stores support an integrated service model. The head of the Mercadona charging service, Angela Clemente Lopez, emphasizes the involvement of national partners in building a high quality charging network. Operators Iberdrola and Repsol will run the charging points, Circutor will manufacture the chargers, and the network is designed to promote electric vehicle use and decarbonize private transport. EV users charging at these points can save roughly half the cost of travel compared with traditional fuel vehicles.

Mercadona is positioning itself ahead of competitors, drawing attention to its share of household expenditures in 2022. Iberdrola’s Global Director of Intelligent Mobility notes that the agreement brings electric mobility closer to citizens by offering semi fast charging at supermarkets. Customers can recharge during shopping and use Iberdrola Public Recharge App to charge and pay, a service already utilized by more than 100,000 users. Repsol’s Director of Electric Mobility adds that the alliance represents another milestone in the company’s commitment to zero net emissions by 2050 and reinforces its leadership in mobility solutions. The initiative aligns with Mercadona’s broader strategy to incorporate renewable energy and energy-saving measures across its operations, reinforcing a sustainable future for the retailer and its customers.
