Unity UGT RTVE believes that Imanol Arias should not return to public television after his recent remarks about RTVE sparked controversy. The producer of Cuéntame issued a statement expressing disagreement with the actor’s comments, and hours later Arias issued an apology on Instagram.
Yet this apology does not satisfy UGT RTVE, who argue that a mere apology cannot repair the damage. They contend that the harm goes beyond a single misstep and that the public statements, which they describe as false and unfair to RTVE and its staff, demand a more substantial response than a few words of remorse.
According to UGT RTVE, the situation has become intolerable for Arias within the network. They suggest he shows little willingness to step back and accept responsibility, noting the potential impact on his earnings per program and the overall dynamics of the show. They propose that a return to work with RTVE should be reconsidered, insisting that the actor already suffered through the episode and that the negative effects should not be brushed aside quickly.
The union disputes the figures Arias cited regarding staff numbers. They assert a total of 6,500 workers, not 9,000, and point out that the budget is 1.2 billion rather than 1.7 billion. Additionally, they reveal what they say Arias earns per episode of Cuéntame, estimating around 47,000 euros, which would amount to roughly 900,000 euros for a full season. They criticize the notion of such compensation in the face of what they describe as a vast workforce facing challenges, arguing that statements about wastefulness were ill-timed and inappropriate given the broader context.
UGT RTVE characterizes the damage to RTVE as severe and lasting. The union believes that the relationship between the network and Arias should mature and evolve, while labeling him as ungrateful and recalling the actor’s significant financial concerns. They describe Arias as a high-earning public figure who must consider how his words affect the institution that serves the public, urging caution in public statements rather than venting complaints that could undermine public trust. The message they convey emphasizes responsibility and accountability over sensational reactions.
The statement closes with a clear stance and a call to action: steps must be taken to resolve the situation, but RTVE should not endure continued disruption. The union warns against the persistence of misinformation that harms the network and those associated with it. They echo a desire for a measured, constructive resolution and for the public and its observers to move forward without ongoing controversy.
