The Guardian of the Tomb of the Desert King, also known as the Overwatch Matrix, is a world boss in Genshin Impact. It can be challenged soon after arriving in the Sumeru desert. Defeating the Guardian yields a Light Conducting Tetrahedron along with artifacts, pestilence, and experience. This resource is linked to Kandacia’s rise. Currently, its defeat is a prerequisite for advancing certain character developments.
How to find the Observation Matrix (Guardian of the Desert King’s Tomb) boss
To begin, players should gather the required items and then proceed to the point marked on the map.
The boss is located in the palace, adjacent to the teleport waypoint.
Which characters should you bring to fight the Guardian of the Tomb of the Desert King
Electro characters are essential because this element can reveal the boss from invisibility and briefly paralyze it. Having a Dendro hero on the team helps trigger catalytic reactions when paired with Electro.
A squad with Electro as the main attacker:
- Main Electro attacker: Keqing, Raiden, or Saino
- Dendro character for catalysis and extra damage: Collei or Dendro Traveler
- Anemo hero to boost elemental reactions: Kazuha, Sucrose, or Sayu

Desert King’s Tomb Guardian Basic Attacks
Square strike. There are two variants – an overhead strike and a flurry of blows. The arena marks the affected area, so players should move away quickly.
Self-guided laser. The guardian fires a beam that tracks the player. Evade until it vanishes.
Explosive sphere. A central ball gathers energy and releases a wide attack. Retreat to the arena edge or target the arena mechanisms with Electro attacks.
Rocket shot. Parts of the guardian spin before firing a missile. When rotation is seen, dodge to the side.
Attack shield. A translucent shield appears and advances, dealing damage. Dodge to the side to let it pass by.
Use of additional mechanisms. Multiple structures appear and the guardian briefly disappears. Attack the rotating parts. When a fiery core forms, shoot it to bring the Guardian back into the arena and resume the fight.
Tactics of the fight with the Guardian of the Tomb of the Desert King
During arena phases, unleash the main character’s skills while supporting heroes cast their abilities and heal when needed. Dodging the Guardian’s attacks and spells is essential.
When the boss becomes briefly invisible, strike the remaining components with Electro and often combine with Dendro to trigger catalysis. This not only makes the Guardian visible again but also paralyzes it, allowing a sequence of quick blows while immobilized.
