The town of Crevillent is set to celebrate the 37th edition of its renowned San Silvestre Internacional on Sunday, December 31 at 17:30. This 10-kilometer race has earned approval from the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation and is part of the international calendar because it consistently delivers a high standard of competition and a festive, community-driven atmosphere. This year, the event introduces significant enhancements and welcomes world-class participants from around the globe.

Champions of the XXXVII San Silvestre Crevillentina

The race continues to attract elite runners from diverse backgrounds. Past winners have included top-tier athletes who have demonstrated exceptional speed and endurance. As the city prepares to host this festive athletic gathering, the field features notable names with impressive resumes in international cross country, road racing, and mountain running, underscoring the event’s growing prestige on the calendar.

The Crevillent Marathon Club, established in 1981, has consistently invited premier athletes to compete. This year, the absolute winner of the most recent edition is expected to participate again, adding a layer of continuity and excitement. The field includes Jessica Mas, along with Kenyan runner Carolyne Biwott, who finished as runner-up at the International Cross Country. The winners from the Zaragoza International Cross in the men’s division are also anticipated to race, alongside competitors such as Eric Nzambimana from Burundi, Allan Biwot from Kenya, and Muhammad Aataati from Morocco, who recently claimed the U-20 World Cup title held in Cali the previous year.

The Athlete Guest of Honor for 2023 is Antonio Martínez Pérez, the champion of the Skyrunning World Series for that year. The lineup also features several renowned athletes: Cristina Juan, the current Spanish 5 km road champion; Júlia Font, who earned a gold medal with the Spanish team in the women’s marathon at the Mountain and Trail Running World Cup in Thailand and is the reigning Spanish Trail Champion of 2023; and Alex Garcia Carrillo, who won the world bronze in uphill events and has earned multiple medals in uphill and classic uphill/downhill races with the Spanish team. These athletes bring a mix of sprinting speed, endurance, and mountain-running prowess, reflecting the event’s diverse athletic profile.

San Silvestre for Young Athletes

In the morning, family-focused activities kick off with Mini San Silvestre for children aged 4 to 11, available with prior registration. This children’s event emphasizes inclusive participation and charitable giving. Between 10:30 and 12:30, a solidarity-themed kids’ quiz will raise funds for the local Red Cross society in Crevillent and support Alzheimer’s research. The club president explains that three euros from each registration will be donated to these local causes, reinforcing the event’s community impact alongside athletic achievement.

Thirty Years of the San Silvestre Crevillentina

This event has earned a prestigious standing, recognized as the second national race of its kind in the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation’s official rankings. Cash prizes reflect the event’s high status: the overall male and female winners receive 600 euros and a commemorative rug; runner-up earns 450 euros, third place 400 euros, with cash rewards extending to eighth place for top national contenders. The prize structure underscores the event’s appeal to international athletes while rewarding national talent.

The celebration is officially opened by the Crevillent mayor, with the start and finish areas laid out along the Fontenay walkway. The organizers have invested in a vibrant spectacle, projecting more than 10,000 watts of sound power at the start, finish, and along various points of interest on the route. The city council, the provincial council, Enercoop, and the Crevillent brand are highlighted as key supporters, with a note that the event can include virtual participation in addition to the traditional in-person race. This year, virtual options offered distances of 5 and 10 kilometers, with opportunities for running, walking, and Nordic walking.

Registration remains open for this popular race, with bib distribution planned from December 29 to 31 at the Omeyas de Crevillent group headquarters on Salitre Street. An additional innovation this year is the new carpet design that features the municipality’s profile, a distinctive keepsake offered to each participant to celebrate the event and its home community. The organizers emphasize that the carpet design reflects Crevillent’s identity and welcomes athletes from near and far to enjoy a memorable competition within a spirited, family-friendly festival atmosphere.
