Crevillent hosts a national boxing championship with hundreds of young athletes

Crevillent has been living inside a historic boxing tournament at the national level since last Monday. The Spanish Boxing Championship gathered 230 competitors from all autonomous communities of the country, with Catalonia notably absent, in the carpet village for what is described as the most participatory national event to date. The crowd wasn’t the only thing growing; attendance has been robust as well. An additional booth has been set up each evening since last Tuesday, and plans call for another on Saturday when the finals are concentrated. Admission is free until capacity is reached.

economic revival

There is clear satisfaction with how the Spanish Boxing Federation, led by Felipe Martínez, has coordinated the event. Crevillent City Council Sports Councilor Marcelino Giménez told this newspaper that local residents and visiting fans, along with competitors’ families, fill the pavilion every day, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere. The mayor highlighted that boxing and Crevillent have been on Spain’s athletic lips all week, and the event has delivered a meaningful economic boost to the town. These moments underline the value of continuing to invest in sports tourism as a way to spotlight Crevillent on the national stage for such championships.

The early rounds and semi-finals began on Friday, with Saturday billed as the main event. The planned matchups in each category promise high-caliber battles. Among the champions crowned here, some will go on to represent the national team at the upcoming World Boxing Championships in November, and later potentially the Olympic Games.

“The Olympic team will come out of this tournament held in Crevillent. We are very honored to have been given this opportunity,” Giménez stated. The City Council, which hosted the youth event last year, arranged the venue with a few technical requirements that boxing nights demand. It also organized transport between the pavilion and the main hotel complex, the Alania Costa Blanca resort in Crevillent, to accommodate the athletes.

The bouts are scheduled from four in the afternoon until nine at night, drawing curious spectators who wander into the municipal pavilion. “We’re visible on national television and on private boxing channels across the Internet,” notes the councillor, highlighting the event’s broad reach and its role in raising Crevillent’s profile on the boxing map.
