The Catalan artist will enter Barça’s storied history when Xavi’s squad meets Real Madrid.
It’s a historic day to remember. Barcelona announced that in the Clásico with Real Madrid on March 19 the team will wear the Motomami logo by Rosalía, described as “the most international Catalan singer of the moment,” on the jersey. This symbol replaces the Spotify emblem, as stated by the club.
Who is Rosalía, which team is she affiliated with, what does Motomami mean, why the association with Barcelona on the shirt?
Rosalía Vila Tobella, simply known as Rosalía, is a singer, songwriter, producer and actress born in Barcelona in 1992. Raised in Sant Esteve Sesrovires, a town near Barcelona, she grew up in a family with a carpentry business and developed a deep passion for music, especially flamenco, from a young age.
She studied at the Superior School of Music of Catalonia, where she met many rising artists. While finishing her studies, she began performing on stage as an opening act for others, such as Miguel Poveda, with her commercial breakthrough coming from a collaboration with her then partner C. Tangana on the track Anter to Die, which set the stage for her first solo album released in 2017, Los Ángeles.
Her initial work carried an intimate, classical vibe rooted in flamenco, accompanied by Raül Refree on guitar and exploring themes of loss. The album was released under Universal. In 2018, the breakthrough truly arrived with El Mal Querer, an album that blends diverse genres around a story of a tortuous love affair, with Malamente becoming a defining anthem.
Rosalía has also released collaborations with global artists such as The Weeknd, Ozuna, Bad Bunny and Billie Eilish. In March 2022 she released Motomami, a project that has earned international acclaim and positioned her as a leading Spanish artist on the world stage. Her logo will now be carried by Barça during the Clásico. [Goal]
What does Motomami mean?
Motomami blends two roots. Moto comes from Japanese and conveys strength, while Mami reflects a feminine, maternal side. Rosalía sought to honor her grandmother and mother, both motorcycle enthusiasts, through this name. She described Motomami as an album with contrasts—sections driven by aggressive percussion and others shaped by intimate ballads that reveal a softer, more vulnerable facet.
In Rosalía’s own words, the project juxtaposes those two sides to create a powerful, multifaceted sound profile that resonates across borders. [Goal]
Which team is Rosalía associated with?
It is no secret. The Catalan artist is a devoted Barça fan. She even appeared at the Santiago Bernabéu to cheer on Barcelona during a match against Real Madrid. Her support for the club underscores a personal connection that the club celebrates through this collaboration.
Barcelona declaration
Barcelona and Spotify chose ROSALÍA to mark the first anniversary of Motomami, a landmark release in contemporary music. The project has earned international praise and received prestigious awards, reflecting Rosalía’s status as a global reference in Spanish-language contemporary music.
