ITV services in Vega Baja and surrounding areas move toward public administration

The discount period appears imminent, and concessionaires in Consell, Redován and Orihuela are nearing a signing that would restart Technical Vehicle Inspection (ITV) services in Vega Baja this coming Saturday. While the final details are still being negotiated, the plan includes a seven‑year lease for the facilities and for the mobile units operated from Elda, Novelda and Pilar de la Horadada. The Generalitat would assume responsibility for 160 employees across all stations and would manage the service directly once the agreement is in place.

The Ministry of Sustainable Economy is finalizing procedures for the ITV transfer across the Valencian Community, to be completed in two installments. The first portion is expected this week and the second next week. The initial package includes Redován and Orihuela, two stations that have presented the most challenging hurdles because concessionaires receive authorization directly from the Ministry of Industry. This setup implies they should not be affected by the public transfer, as they own and defend their own facilities.

In recent days, positions on both sides have begun to converge, laying the groundwork for an agreement that centers on a seven‑year lease. This covers the station buildings and the equipment that delivers vehicle inspection services. Ricardo Pérez, president of the Redován and Valencia Community of Vehicle Technical Inspection Concession Stations Association (Aecova-ITV), confirms that the deal has progressed to a formal stage and emphasizes the sense of responsibility behind it. He notes that negotiations were time‑sensitive, but ultimately an understanding was reached to ensure continuity of service at both central and mobile stations, which is what matters most to the public.

The public administration of ITV will begin with service reductions at El Campello, Santa Pola and Calp. The agreement, the figures of which have not yet been disclosed, requires concessionaires to replace any equipment that is damaged and to maintain electricity and supply contracts during the replacement period. It also underscores that the arrangement is about operational inspection centers, not merely physical facilities.

Under this framework, the unique aspect is that while the core dependencies and equipment will stay private, the rest of the operations will be public for all intents and purposes. The Ministry of Economy will assume control starting Saturday after the workforce has been transferred. Rates will remain aligned with those in force across the Valencian Community.

Alcoy, Benidorm, Torrevieja and Villena ITV stations are set to close this Saturday, one day after their concessions expire. Josep Albert Quilis, director of the Valencian ITV Society, a Ministry of Economy subsidiary, explains that the day will be used for technicians to inventory facilities and verify readiness for a Monday reopening under public administration. Redován and Orihuela stations will operate this Saturday because the only change is that workers will become state employees under Generalitat, while the actual service will resume under the public framework.
Alicante and Elche stations, with concessions expiring on the 3rd, will follow suit next week and close on the 4th for inventory. Reopening is planned for the 6th.

Residents of Calp, El Campello and Santa Pola will experience a short delay before service resumes. The first mobile unit in Calp will be out of service on Friday, with a replacement to be arranged. In El Campello and Santa Pola the facilities will halt on March 3 and require replacement equipment as well.

sources and the ITV Industry Consortium provided context for the transition and the planned schedule. Further updates will be issued by the relevant authorities as the process advances.
