Before advancing in Baldur’s Gate 3, players must manage more than just battles. They need to handle mission items with care. In the second act a veil of darkness blocks the way, and a sliver of moonlight can cut through it. This guide explains where to locate broken and functional lamps and how to repair them.

Riddles and puzzles in Baldur’s Gate 3

What’s the moonlight for in Baldur’s Gate 3

The moon lantern shields the party from a dark curse that prevents movement through shadowy regions. Before venturing to the Moon Towers, securing this lantern is a smart precaution.

How to find broken moonlights and how to save Nere in Baldur’s Gate 3

When moonlight pixie pollination is missing, the lantern remains inactive. Players can restore it if they wish. A lantern can be found in Grimforge during the rescue of Nere from rubble.

When a quest involves Nere, leaving the area or equipping the lantern can risk failing the quest and cutting off other gnome-related storylines.

The initial conversation should be with Trinn. The sergeant notes that black powder is needed to save Nere. There are two ways to obtain this resource:

  • Head to Philomina’s stash;
  • Search the second-floor room in the nearby house.

The second option is faster, so it is recommended. After gathering gunpowder, return to Nere. Explosive powder should not be used like a typical bomb, as it harms allies. It’s best placed near the blockade, then a short retreat followed by a flame from an arrow or a fire spell.

With an enchanter wielding Chromatic Orb: Thunder, the barrier can be bypassed by casting magic on the stones to disperse them rapidly and create a passage.

Afterward, Nere can be slain or won over. If spared, he may offer help and a reward upon a future meeting in the Moon Towers, but the rescue of the gnomes will fail. The outcome changes, yet a broken lantern remains in each path.

How to fix (repair) broken moonlights in Baldur’s Gate 3

It remains unclear whether lanterns without pixie dust can be repaired. A future update may introduce this feature. In the meantime, players can traverse shadowed lands without a lantern by locating Pixies Dolly-Dolly-Dolly, who dwells in the Underdark, a region opened in Act 2.

Freeing the pixies grants a special status that resembles the moonlight’s effect. If the lantern is destroyed, the pixies take offense and offer no aid.

How to find a working moonlight in Baldur’s Gate 3

The search for a functional lantern leads to Carniss Drider, hidden within the Last Light Inn.

Local bandits gather to take Carniss down. It’s wise not to rush in; wait for Carniss to take a hit, then join the fight.

The enemy’s strength is amplified by a unique ability named “Shelter.” While Carniss is active, normal attacks miss, leaving only area spells as viable options. In that window, allies should regroup, heal, and cast buffs. When magic stops working, strike with the strongest blows available.

If Carniss drops the lantern during the struggle, the shelter spell ends. This is the moment to act. A second lantern can be found in the Lunar Towers, in Balthazar’s chamber, though reaching it requires crossing the Cursed Lands. More on finding this lantern is covered in this guide.
