In Baldur’s Gate 3, players have the freedom to tackle each quest in their own way. Some may choose to smash a door and confront every foe to obtain the needed item. Others will prefer stealth, quietly slipping through and stealing what they require. The latter path demands special tools. This guide explains where to locate and purchase sapper and thief tools in the game.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Guides
How to locate thieves and sapper tools across the open world of Baldur’s Gate 3
As a player advances through Baldur’s Gate 3, a vast bounty of loot awaits discovery. Inventory space often becomes a limitation, and merchants nearby may not always stock the rare tools thieves and sappers need. These tools are comparatively scarce compared with ordinary weapons or armor.
They can be found by inspecting various chests and crates, sometimes dropping from defeated foes. Thorough exploration and looting, including checking fallen enemies, typically eliminates the need for a separate hunt for tools during the second act of the story.
There are moments when advancing a quest requires opening a door on the spot, and tools are not immediately available. In those cases, traders scattered across the region become essential allies. Below are the notable locations and traders for obtaining these tools.
All merchant thieves and sappers in Act 1 of Baldur’s Gate 3
The first act introduces a mix of traders, some neutral and some hostile. Player style dictates interactions. A ruthless player might eliminate traders who seem unreliable, but this approach has a downside: once those merchants and key figures are dead, future stock becomes harder to find until new mobile shops appear. For a smoother experience, it’s wise to buy lock picks, weapons, and other necessities before engaging in any carnage.
Arron (Emerald Grove)
Story progress places the adventurer in the Emerald Grove. After the goblin skirmish at the city gates, proceed a little further along the road to a nearby cave. On the right, a stone pedestal marks Arron’s location. It is noted that Arron may already be claimed in some playthroughs.
Brehm (Zentarim Shrine)
Travel to Waukeen’s Refuge and move into the courtyard. To the right of the main entrance is a fire. Turn left into a narrow arch. After leaning on the stables, turn right and inspect a wooden passage box, break it, and enter.
Inside the barn, a character named Salazon awaits. After passing a few checks, descend to the basement and find a closet that opens a path to a hidden area.
Upon arriving at a new location, another check may be required. If the locals are unfriendly, combat can begin, and trading with Brem becomes impossible.
Roa Moonlight (Broken Shrine)
The Broken Shrine is reachable via the Goblin Camp. After completing side questions and moving on to the Lunar Towers quest, Roa Moonlight becomes a potential contact.
If negotiations fail with the locals, Roa Moonlight may become unrecoverable for trades.
Derrith Bonecloak (Deepholm – myconid colony)
Access to this area comes after solving the lunar circles puzzle. If the path leads to a myconid settlement, speak with Derrit. She not only sells useful tools but can also start the quest Find a Mushroom Picker. This guide already mentions that quest.
Beyond tools for thieves and sappers, Derrit offers a wide array of items and ingredients.
Note: This is not an exhaustive list of all first-party tool suppliers. The guide will be updated with more findings as exploration continues.
All merchant thieves and sappers in Act 2 of Baldur’s Gate 3
Act 2 features fewer merchants once Moon Towers are reached, but there is always the option to revisit earlier locations if Runic Circles have been activated. Open the map, select the desired circle, and return to the previous trader.
Roa Moonlight (Moon Towers)
Roa Moonlight awaits in the Moon Towers, provided she has not been eliminated earlier. Following the same path may prevent acquiring items here. The towers host another vendor, Arai Oblodra, but her stock can be limited.
Bark Route (Last Light Tavern)
At this location, a leprechaun asks for help rescuing a relative named Vulbren from prison in the Lunar Towers. The guide has previously explained how to rescue Vulbren and the Tieflings.
Visit the tavern if it is accessible. Barka is found on the first floor. Compared to other traders, the selection is small, and only one unit of each desired item may be available.
All merchant thieves and sappers in Act 3 of Baldur’s Gate 3
The final act is still being explored. A concise list of known vendors is provided, with a note that updates will follow as more details surface.
- Glinda Altauer: Sells four sets of thieves and sappers tools. Found near the second checkpoint on the southern side of Wyrm’s Crossing at coordinates X:0, Y:142.
- Roa Moonlight: Appears during Jahira’s search for companions after the robbery. If she is missed earlier, this may be the remaining chance to trade.
- Sticky Dondo: Located in the town hall sewer, coordinates X:62, Y:-100. Inside, the merchant is the sole trader present.
At present, these are the known merchants of specialized resources across Baldur’s Gate 3. The game is vast, and more traders may surface on subsequent playthroughs. If any issues arise or inaccuracies are noticed, readers are encouraged to share feedback in the comments. The aim is to assist fellow players as best as possible.
