Even in the early chapters players encounter locked doors that require bolt cutters. Rushing ahead is not the path because the item arrives late on purpose to encourage exploration and collection sequencing.
To secure the bolt cutters progress through the story as Saga and head to the nursing home in the chapter Return 5 The Old Gods. Merely arriving does not suffice. A sign must be found and a fold in the pond opened.
This leads to an abandoned bunker where Saga winds up in a looping sequence. Proceed forward until a locked metal box containing bolt cutters appears.
To open it, activate the switch and inspect the adjacent room. Locate another switch there and turn it on. Then rummage through the drawers to retrieve a key from the cupboard alongside the bolt cutters. Return to the first room, switch off the lights, and open the drawer.
Where should bolt cutters be used in Alan Wake 2
After defeating the old woman and returning to the real world, the bolt cutters can unlock several doors. The locations are mapped below for clarity and ease of navigation.

- They create a recess between the country house courtyard and the main entrance.

At this location one locked gate can be opened to reach rented cottages. Inside waits a lunchbox, a cultist stash, a nursery rhyme puzzle and a stuffed deer. This opportunity should not be missed.

Two specific spots allow bolt cutter use. The first gives access to the Knights of Kalevala workshop backyard with sect supplies and caches. The second opens a closed grille in the caravan park, granting entry to a nursery rhyme trailer.
