Should the opposition take power?
According to an IBRiS poll conducted for Rzeczpospolita and RMF FM, public opinion is almost evenly split on whether the opposition should retain control after the elections. The survey explored whether the current opposition, namely the Civic Coalition, Third Road, and the Left, should lead the government in Poland following the vote.
Responses divided the voters into two nearly equal camps. Forty-nine point four percent said the opposition should govern, while fifty point six percent believed they should not. The level of certainty within each group was similar: thirty-four point three percent felt the opposition should definitely be in power, and thirty-four percent disagreed with that stance.
Is opposition government possible?
Rzeczpospolita notes a different picture when respondents were asked whether it is realistic for the opposition to govern after the elections. Forty-seven point six percent answered in the affirmative, with twenty-three point nine percent saying it is certain and twenty-three point seven percent saying it is reasonable.
Forty point five percent did not see a realistic path for the opposition to govern, including thirty-one point five percent who felt it was definitely not feasible and nine percent who thought it rather unlikely. About twelve percent of respondents were unsure or said it was hard to say.
If voters are grouped by preferred party, no government supporters believed the opposition should govern, and only six percent of them thought it could happen. On the other hand, a substantial share of opposition supporters felt confident about ruling, with eighty-one percent endorsing the idea that the opposition should govern and seventy-four percent expressing belief in this possibility.
Undecided answers
The survey also highlighted attitudes among those who were undecided. The report from Rzeczpospolita shows that twenty percent of undecided respondents from the IBRiS poll believe the Civic Coalition, the New Left, and the Third Way should win. Forty percent think this could happen. As many as thirty-three percent did not have an opinion on the issue.
The fieldwork was conducted from September 29 to 30, 2023 using the CATI method with a sample of one thousand respondents.
