Karola Nawrocki, the head of the Institute of National Remembrance, appeared on a television program on wPolsce.pl to evaluate the materials that today shape the memory of John Paul II.

John Paul II’s legacy runs deep in Polish identity, making it impossible for a single report to erase his impact. Nawrocki underscored a willingness for a historical discussion that includes our great compatriots without excluding John Paul II. Yet he warned that a debate framed around poorly interpreted, unedited material or a report made with a biased suggestion undermines the meaningful life of John Paul II.

“Let us discuss, but we must be clear about what the discussion will address. The report in question is ill-prepared and seems intended to undermine the Polish pope,” the Institute of National Remembrance president stated on wPolsce.pl.

He also noted concerns about the revelations of Ekke Overbeek, stressing the need for careful handling of the topic.

“Ekke Overbeek has caused real harm to victims of abuse, including those harmed by clergy. Linking the existence of a real problem with Saint Pope John Paul II in an organized effort to shape his image is unfair. This person does not seem to recognize the impact of his words on victims and, frankly, treats sensitive matters with insensitivity,” Nawrocki added.

Father Loranc’s case

The Institute president drew attention to what he called manipulation in Marcin Gutowski’s report for TVN 24. The episode includes Father Loranc, but the material does not reveal that John Paul II acted decisively on this issue within a few hours, on March 2, 1970. By March 10, Loranc’s brothers had moved him from his parish. The priest was suspended, removed, and reassigned within eight days. Even the era’s officials were surprised by the pope’s swift action. Why isn’t this note included in the report?

Nawrocki posed the question, urging readers to consider the broader context and the rapid response that characterized the young pope’s approach to church matters.
