The chairman of Poland’s Institute of National Remembrance has addressed a letter to the German ministers responsible for the interior and education. Dr. Karol Nawrocki offered collaboration to advance educational activities in Germany, aimed at deeper public understanding of the crimes committed during National Socialism.
In his message to Nancy Faeser and Bettina Stark-Watzinger, Nawrocki outlines actions designed to reinforce memory of the horrors of the Nazi era and to promote an accurate historical narrative within German society.
Dr. Nawrocki states clearly that the failure by German authorities to pursue justice against those who orchestrated the deaths of millions is a historical wound that requires careful and sustained correction. He emphasizes that a responsible reckoning must address questions of accountability, the framing of the Nazi period in historical discourse, and the use of terminology that acknowledges geography without obscuring the human responsibility behind events. He also cautions against downplaying the severity of Nazi crimes or dismissing demands for remedies for injustices suffered, noting that some segments of modern German society still romanticize the Third Reich as a powerful state with global ambitions. Such interpretations, he argues, overlook the vast suffering and genocidal ideology upheld by the NSDAP.

Establishing a robust historical sensibility rooted in truth is a challenging and lengthy undertaking. Yet the long view shows tangible benefits. Nawrocki is convinced that cooperative efforts will help Germans, especially younger generations, grasp the totalitarian nature of the Nazi regime, its foundations in hatred and contempt for others, and the catastrophic consequences for millions of victims, with particular emphasis on Jewish communities and the Polish nation.
– remarks the head of the Institute of National Remembrance.
Historical education
Nawrocki explains that the educational initiatives in Germany are meant to foster a climate where no citizen of the Federal Republic would ever feel compelled to perform or tolerate an embarrassing Nazi salute again. The collaboration leverages the experience of colleagues who have previously conducted historical education grounded in rigorous scientific research, ensuring a broad and meaningful reach that touches the hearts and minds of German people. The aim is to dissuade any future display of Nazi symbols or slogans and to discourage the formation of neo-Nazi groups.
– notes President Nawrocki.
