The Minimum Vital Income (MVI) is a non-contributory social security benefit designed to ensure a basic level of income for people and families facing economic vulnerability. Its purpose is to help prevent poverty and social exclusion by keeping households financially afloat. The amount granted depends on the household composition and is adjusted annually to meet beneficiaries’ evolving needs.

In 2024, the MVI amounts rose by 6.9 percent, so eligible families will see an increase in support this year.

Who can qualify for the MVI?

The MVI targets living units that demonstrate economic vulnerability and do not exceed defined income and wealth thresholds. These households may include relatives, married couples, domestic partners, or even units formed by victims of gender-based violence or seniors over 65 who do not receive retirement pensions or non-contributory benefits.

To apply for the MVI, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Legal and effective residence. Applicants must reside legally and actually in the country and have done so for a continuous period prior to application.
  • Household unit. The household’s incomes and wealth are evaluated in relation to the applicant.
  • Economic situation. The household’s financial status is assessed to ensure income and wealth stay within established thresholds.

IMV amounts for 2024

The MVI amounts for 2024 vary by household composition, with specific figures for single-parent households and those with members who have a disability. These allowances are distributed monthly and annually, and they differ according to family structure. For example, a single adult receives a monthly amount of 604.38 euros, while a household with one adult and three or more dependents can reach 1,329.65 euros per month.

Child Benefit of 1,400 euros

The MVI includes a child support supplement aimed at families with minor children, intended to promote child well-being and support family caregiving. The supplement amounts depend on the child’s age and the family’s economic situation, with specific annual allocations for low-income households.

Similarly, applicants with families that do not exceed income and wealth limits may still qualify for this supplement by meeting the established criteria.

The following requirements apply to these cases:

  • Belonging to a household with one or more minors.
  • Household income must not exceed 300% of the thresholds set in the scale used to calculate the guaranteed income, based on household type.
  • The net wealth of the family must not exceed 150% of the limit set in the wealth scale relevant to the household type.
  • Passing the assets test, which is set at six times the guaranteed income for an adult, using the same incremental scale as the income limit.

There is a table for each scenario showing the different amounts, available on the Social Security website. Citations accompany this information.

For minors aged 0 to 3, the annual amount is 1,380 euros (115 euros per month); for ages 3 to 6, it is 966 euros per year (80.5 euros per month); and for ages 6 to 28, it is 690 euros per year (57.5 euros per month).

Automatic child support and eligibility

The child support supplement is received automatically if the MVI is already being drawn, but families not yet enrolled can apply if they meet the criteria. To access the benefit, the MVI application can be submitted through the Social Security electronic portal, with the appropriate guidance available in the official resources noted in citations.

Interested applicants should navigate to the Social Security site to begin the process. Notes and official guidance are provided for those who need to verify eligibility.
