The Minimum Vital Income (MVI) stands as a core social policy in Spain, aimed at reducing poverty and social exclusion. This financial aid is granted to families facing adverse economic circumstances to ensure a basic income that covers essential needs. The amount provided varies based on family composition and economic situation, with no fixed sum set in stone.
To qualify for the MVI, applicants must meet certain criteria, including legal and effective residency in Spain, belonging to a household unit where income and assets are assessed, and not exceeding established income and asset thresholds.
Who can receive the Child Aid Supplement?
The Child Aid Supplement is a monthly extra payment given to families with minors. Families must meet specific income and asset requirements to be eligible for this supplement.
Thus, the eligibility criteria are as follows:
- Pertaining to a household unit with one or more minors.
- The household income must not exceed 300% of the thresholds set in the income scale used to calculate the guaranteed rent, according to the type of household unit.
- The family net assets must not exceed 150% of the limit defined in the asset scale applicable to the household type.
- Meet the asset test, set at six times the guaranteed rent for an adult, using the same income-scale increments as the rent limit for the household type.
The eligibility for the MVI and the Child Aid Supplement can be checked through the simulator available at the National Institute of Social Security (INSS). If a family is eligible for the MVI and has the right to the supplement, it will be granted automatically. If eligible only for the supplement, a separate application for the MVI is required.
How much does the Child Aid Supplement provide?
The Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migrations notes that the amount for this key poverty-fighting instrument remains unchanged from 2023 and is determined by the number of minors in the household, as well as the age of each child on January 1 of the respective year, following these brackets:
- Children under 3 years: 115 euros.
- Children aged 3 to under 6: 80.50 euros.
- Children aged 6 to under 18: 57.50 euros.
These measures provide essential financial support to families facing vulnerability in Spain. The MVI and child subsidies do not only offer relief in money; they reflect a government commitment to citizen welfare. The aim is to improve living conditions for many families and offer a path toward greater economic stability and well-being.
