The Minimum Vital Income (IMV) is a social policy implemented in Spain to curb poverty and social exclusion. This financial support ensures a basic level of income for households facing economic hardship.

What is the Minimum Subsistence Income?

IMV provides economic assistance to households that cannot cover essential needs due to their financial situation. It is a broad-based measure aimed at guaranteeing a minimum standard of living and reducing social inequalities.

The IMV amount varies based on several factors, including household composition and the specific financial circumstances. There is no single fixed sum; it is calculated on a case-by-case basis.

To receive IMV, several requirements must be met:

  • Legal and effective residence. Applicants must be legally and effectively resident in Spain and have maintained that status for a continuous period before applying.
  • Cohabitation unit. The income and assets of the applicant’s household are assessed.
  • Economic situation. Considering the household’s financial position, it is ensured that income and assets do not exceed set thresholds.

IMV childhood benefit supplement

The IMV child support supplement is an additional benefit for families with young children. Its aim is to support vulnerable families and help reduce child poverty.

The supplement amount depends on the child’s age:

  • Children under three years old: 115 euros.
  • Children from three to under six: 80.50 euros.
  • Children from six to under eighteen: 57.50 euros.

The total range can be from €565.37 for an adult in a shared household to €1,23.83 if the same unit has four adults and a minor. For a typical family of two adults and two young children, the monthly benefit reaches 1,074.21 euros.

The requirements to access this supplement, as detailed by the Department of Labor, include:

  • Be part of a cohabitation unit that includes minors.
  • Meet IMV export requirements.
  • Not exceed the maximum limits on assessable income, net worth, and assets.

How to claim the IMV child supplement

Eligible families can request this additional support through the National Social Security Institution. If IMV rights already exist, the supplement is automatically recognized. Otherwise, a separate application must be submitted to IMV for the benefit to be granted.

The supplement takes effect from the first day of the month following the month of application and is paid monthly by bank transfer. Its duration continues as long as the economic vulnerability persists and the conditions for entitlement remain.
