Mercadona outlined a new relief plan to support residents affected by the DANA floods in the Valencia region. The Valencia-based supermarket chain has invested a little more than two million euros to back the recovery of the areas around its stores and its logistics hub in Riba-roja de Túria, which were hit by the disaster. The company states that this initiative, added to other measures already launched since October 29, aims to help neighbors regain normal life. Local authorities and community leaders were consulted to coordinate efforts and ensure the work aligns with public safety and recovery priorities. The plan combines direct financial support with practical on-the-ground work to restore streets, services, and daily life for residents. It also emphasizes transparency, measurable progress, and collaboration with municipal teams to accelerate the return of everyday activity across affected neighborhoods.
Through its Alcem-se initiative, coordinated by the company’s works department and led by Juan Roig, the program makes available to residents, with prior authorization from the town hall, a range of cleaning and refurbishment tasks for the streets and surroundings of the supermarkets. Heavy machinery and fire pumps are deployed to remove mud and debris, reopen access routes, and improve sanitation conditions. In total, sixteen suppliers participate, providing employment to more than 110 people. The operation prioritizes neighborhoods most affected by the floods, aiming to restore safe passage, restore basic services, and support the broader rebuilding of community life that supports local commerce and social cohesion.
Vehicle Removal
Among the most visible recovery actions are those carried out in Picanya, Paiporta, Alfafar, Catarroja, and Aldaia. In Aldaia, and in collaboration with authorities, vehicles were removed from public roadways to clear routes for residents and business activity. Mercadona reiterates its commitment to continuing whatever is necessary to help Valencia resume its economic and social activity and the daily rhythms of its residents. The ongoing effort reflects a long-term approach to rebuilding, not just cleaning up, with a focus on safety, mobility, and supporting the reopening of shops, schools, and services that communities depend on.
Recently, about 1,000 Mercadona employees affected by the DANA received relief funds directly into their bank accounts. The company decided to provide this support to ease the burden of rebuilding lives after the disaster. Specifically, the firm has guaranteed 50,000 euros to those who lost their home, whether fully or partially, and 15,000 euros for those who lost a car. These payments are designed to deliver quick, tangible help to workers facing housing and transportation challenges, reinforcing the company’s responsibility toward its workforce during crises.
Marina of Companies
Mercadona has also chosen to donate 40 million euros to assist workers affected by the DANA. These actions join other efforts from the firm’s leadership in recent days, including a 25 million euro commitment from Marina de Empresas to back companies in various sectors that were damaged by the floods. The combined generosity demonstrates a sustained, organized response from the corporate group aimed at stabilizing livelihoods, protecting jobs, and supporting regional economic continuity in the face of natural disasters. It underscores a strategy that pairs direct aid to individuals with broader financing for businesses, helping communities rebound more quickly and with greater resilience.
