Cepsa strengthens its leadership in water and climate management for a fourth consecutive year, as reported by the international rating agency CDP. The company achieved an A- rating, the top score worldwide within the integrated oil and gas sector, and earned a “water security leadership” designation, a recognition reached by only about 4% of peers in the industry. Additionally, Cepsa is recognized as an industry leader in climate change, ranking among the 18% of sector companies acknowledged for this achievement.
CDP, a non-profit organization, analyzes the performance of more than 23,000 companies across industries and countries, making it the world’s primary environmental information platform. Among the 4,815 companies evaluated for water stewardship, Cepsa surpassed both European averages and its sector median, highlighting positive business impacts, responsible water use, and robust corporate policies governing water resource management. The company has set a target to cut freshwater intake in water-stressed regions by 20% by 2025, compared with 2019 usage. This initiative stands out as one of the most ambitious in the international energy sector and is projected to save more than 3 million cubic meters of freshwater annually.
Mar Perrote, Director of Safety, Environment and Quality at Cepsa, emphasized that the outstanding results reflect the company’s correct direction in water management and place it at the forefront of the sector. She noted Cepsa’s firm commitment to the efficient and responsible use of this essential resource, adding that the circular economy is a pivotal lever for achieving leadership in the energy transition.
As part of its sustainable water stewardship, Cepsa recently inaugurated a wastewater reuse plant at the San Roque Energy Park in Cadiz. This facility enables a 25% reduction in freshwater consumption for its activities and a 53% reduction when combined with other optimization and efficiency measures implemented over the past three years at the site. A collaboration with ARCGISA, the public water and service company for the Campo de Gibraltar region, will support use of recycled water from a future regional wastewater treatment plant to produce green hydrogen. The company also advances initiatives to lower freshwater demand, such as improvements to the effluent treatment plant at the La Rábida Energy Park in Huelva, aimed at saving 7% of the water drawn annually by that facility.
In summary, Cepsa’s ongoing water stewardship and climate actions underscore its aim to create long-term value through responsible resource use, operational efficiency, and strategic partnerships that support the broader energy transition. These efforts align with global sustainability expectations and position the firm as a model for the oil and gas sector in both water management and climate resilience.
