Air Fryer Cheese Balls Recipe
This easy and delicious appetizer is a crowd pleaser. Using an air fryer instead of traditional oil frying makes these cheese balls lighter and crisper with less grease. The result is reminiscent of croquettes but distinctly their own, featuring a creamy cheese center with a golden crust.
- 1 glass grated cheese mozzarella or a blend of mozzarella, cheddar, gouda, or similar cheeses
- 1 glass cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup all purpose flour
- 1 large egg, scrambled
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Cooking spray or oil spray
Cheese balls in the air fryer offer a snack with great texture and flavor. The idea is simple: blend cheeses, bind with a little flour and egg, coat in breadcrumbs, then crisp in a hot air fryer. The outcome is a golden, crunchy exterior with a soft, cheesy interior that’s satisfying for any gathering.
In a bowl, combine the shredded cheese and cream cheese until smooth and evenly blended. If a hint of garlic, parsley, salt, and pepper is desired, add them during this mix for an extra layer of flavor.
With clean hands, shape the mixture into small firm balls. Place them on a tray and freeze for at least 30 minutes so they hold their shape during coating and cooking.
Set up a breading station with three shallow dishes: flour in the first, beaten egg in the second, and breadcrumbs in the third. Retrieve the frozen cheese balls and roll them first in flour, then dip in egg, and finally coat generously with breadcrumbs so each ball is evenly covered.
Preheat the air fryer to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (180 degrees Celsius).
Arrange the coated cheese balls in the air fryer basket with space between each piece to ensure proper air circulation. Lightly spray with cooking oil for a crisper crust.
Cook for 6 to 8 minutes, or until the exterior turns golden and crisp. Depending on the air fryer model, batches may be required to accommodate all pieces.
Remove the cheese puffs from the air fryer and allow them to cool briefly before serving. They make an excellent appetizer or a different kind of first course that pairs well with dips or a simple salad.
