The Hogwarts Legacy protagonist starts with a small inventory, but players can expand it by completing Merlin’s trials. This guide explains how to finish all of Merlin’s challenges and which spells are most useful for each task.

When the game starts and the loadout menu opens, the hero has just 20 slots for clothing items. This limit persists for a while, but upgrades are available to double the inventory space.
In Hogwarts Legacy, gear comes in different rarities and qualities. It can be purchased, found in chests, or rewarded for completing missions. Players can equip six types of gear, including hats, face coverings, robes, and other apparel, to customize their look and boost stats.
Expanding inventory space is not immediate. Players begin by tackling many Merlin challenges, which are small open-world puzzles scattered across the map.
First, many story quests must be completed to reach Merlin’s Trials and begin the process.
How to expand the inventory in Hogwarts Legacy
In the Research menu, scroll to the Trials of Merlin tab. The task is divided into five stages, and each achieved milestone grants additional inventory slots:
- 2 trials of Merlin
- 6 trials of Merlin
- 10 trials of Merlin
- 14 trials of Merlin
- 18 trials of Merlin
Before increasing capacity, players may sell surplus items to any merchant encountered on the map. It is also possible to preserve the appearance of any item found so far, allowing equipment to be recolored. As a last resort, unnecessary gear can be discarded, though selling remains the recommended option.
How to start Merlin’s trials and locate them on the map
Merlin’s trials unlock after speaking with Nora Treadwell, encountered soon after finishing the Wet quest titled The Girl from Uagadou. Her distress call marks the start of the task. Players should approach, converse, and protect her from Rookwood’s henchmen.
Merlin’s tests appear on the map in the open world as leaflets. On the ground they are indicated by decorative stone circles with petals. Using the Revelio spell can reveal color changes.
Most Merlin’s Trials admit multiple solutions, and some require an unlocked broom to complete. In total there are 85 trials in the game, with many requiring specific spells to progress.
Tasks fall into nine distinct types. The solution for each is typically found near the starting point.
Tasting with a large stone ball
Required Spell: Depulso.
The goal is to roll a heavy sphere into a ground recess. The balls are tall and roll slowly, making precise movement challenging.
Tasting with small stone balls
Required spell: Accio.
Stone slabs with four circular holes are scattered around, with nearby small balls. Use Accio to pull the orbs to each slab.
Tasting with braziers
Required spell: Confringo or Incendio.
Three braziers mounted on pillar stones must be lit in a specific order as they sink. Start with the highest and finish with the lowest.
Tasting moths
Required spell: Lumio.
Lead a group of moths to a glowing statue and repeat the action twice more. The moths can be elusive; Revelio helps reveal them, and Lumio gathers them toward the wand and statue.
Trials with broken statues
Required spell: Reparo.
Three statues crack apart at the start of the trial. Cast Reparo on all three to reconstruct them.
Block testing
Required spell: Flipendo.
One of Merlin’s toughest challenges involves three columns made of stacked blocks. The initial goal is to rotate the top block of each column until symbols align, paying attention to the direction of the arrows. Reposition yourself and adjust the rotation as needed.
Experimenting with green stones
Required Spell: Confringo.
One of the simpler Merlin tasks uses a single spell to demolish blocks. Hidden gems glow blue when Revelio is used to reveal them.
Tests with balls on columns
Required Spell: Basic Spell.
Another straightforward challenge uses standard spells to strike stone balls on columns. Balls come in groups of three around the mission marker, often hidden behind walls or perched on high ground, but Revelio helps reveal them.
Platform testing
Required Spell: None.
One of Merlin’s rarest trials is a simple obstacle course of platform jumps. Jump from platform to platform without touching the ground until the finish line is reached.
