Which faculty to choose
Many fans recognize that a large share of the most formidable wizards in the wizarding world studied in Slytherin. Although later developments added more nuance with gentler characters, the lineage of ambition and cunning remains a hallmark. Villains like Voldemort, Bellatrix, and the Malfoys all began as students who sharpened their wits and their will.
Hogwarts Legacy lets players select their path from the start, so entering the dungeons of Slytherin is the first step toward a darker arc within the game’s world.
How to deal with other students
Even though the game offers limited choice in dialogue, some responses tilt toward a positive or negative tone. In side quests, for example, the hero might opt to keep a found item or demand a reward. A true dark mage uses deception when it serves personal goals, so interactions can tilt toward shrewd and selfish choices.
How to dress
The wardrobe of a potential dark lord should fit the mood. Ideally, a dark arts kit would be ideal, but in many cases the best approach is to select the most impressive, stylish gear available. A hood adds to the air of mystery, but it should match the character’s demeanor and the setting, especially when venturing into darker areas like the Forbidden Forest.
There is no need to wear only low-tier items to stay stylish. Gear evolves with progression, unlocking new appearances and options as the adventure unfolds.
To change appearance, hover over an item and choose the option to adjust its look.
What happens when you become a dark mage?
As noted, the game does not enforce a moral system or a reputation meter. There are no penalties for using forbidden magic. The maximum effect is that non-player characters offer fresh commentary, with some showing approval and others judgment.
Which talents to choose
Within the Talents menu there is a dedicated branch labeled Dark Arts. The artwork features a red-eyed wizard, echoing the classic image of a rising dark figure. The initial talents in this branch add curses to standard spells, increasing damage, while the stronger talents push toward mastering unforgivable spells. With these upgrades, a player can overwhelm foes and even decimate groups, giving the impression of a fearsome power build.
How to learn unforgivable spells
None of the Unforgivable Curses—Crucio, Imperio, or Avada Kedavra—are tied to the core story. They become available through side missions involving Sebastian Sallow, a Slytherin ally with a keen interest in forbidden magic. Early on, he expresses curiosity about these powers, guiding the player toward learning more.
Avada Kedavra stands out as one of the most sought-after spells. It can end battles quickly, but unlocking it requires progress, including a specific quest titled In the Shadow of the Relic and reaching a higher level. Crucio temporarily immobilizes and torments enemies, obtainable through a separate quest path. Imperio offers control over an opponent and follows a similar questline with a relic-based discovery.
In open world areas, there is a dedicated arena where players can practice forbidden magic and refine their techniques against a variety of opponents.
