1. Fable
The first title to highlight is Fable, a beloved action RPG released in 2004. The main character can wield real weapons as well as cast magic. Experience points collected in the world are used to upgrade abilities and gear, shaping how the hero grows over time.
The game offers extensive options for customizing the hero. Every choice left a visible mark on the world: a good deed earned karma and a halo that glowed above the character, while misdeeds could turn the hero into a villain and draw dark, horned outlines. The player can decide the path the hero takes, whether to face foes head on or pursue quieter pursuits like fishing. This freedom is a core appeal.
The essence of Fable lies in player agency: the story unfolds based on how the hero acts, whether benevolent or ruthless, and how the world responds to those choices. That sense of influence is a central draw and remains thoroughly infectious.
