Baldur’s Gate 3 guides
Where to find Karlach
During the journey through Faerûn in Baldur’s Gate 3, players encounter Karlach, a fierce barbarian with tiefling heritage who joins the group. Karlach’s quest centers on fixing an infernal mechanism that replaces her heart. This guide explains how to meet Karlach, where to locate the infernal mechanic, and how to obtain the infernal iron she requires.
You can meet Karlach for the first time by moving north, just outside an abandoned goblin-occupied village. Along the way, players may also meet another companion, the dog Shkryab, who can be invited to join the camp.
From there, proceed to the river, hop over the rocks, and track the blood trail east until a fallen tree blocks the path. Karlach waits on the opposite side, ready to join the party.
An approximate search area will light up if the player begins the quest with another companion, Will. It is possible to bring Will along to influence a dialogue with the Blade of the Frontier regarding the fate of a certain she-devil. After some time, Karlach will ask for help with a malfunctioning heart mechanism that appears to be connected to infernal magic.
Where to find the infernal mechanic
The first step is to find a mechanic who understands infernal devices. The person who fits this bill is Dammon, a tiefling blacksmith who operates in the Druid Grove. His shop is a place to barter weaponry and armor and to listen for rumors that hint at the otherworldly forge he maintains.
If the Save the Refugees quest has already been completed, Dammon can be found at the Last Light Inn. There he has opened a second forge and continues to offer travelers a selection of arms and armor.
Initiate dialogue with the blacksmith while Karlach accompanies the group. Karlach will have a chance to evaluate Dammon and request his aid. To create an Infernal Mover, Dammon requires Infernal Iron, a rare and valuable material. If the necessary items are already in the player’s possession, deliver the iron and watch the cutscene unfold.
If Infernal Iron has been sold, try to recall which merchant purchased it, as repurchasing is often possible, though at a higher price.
The material is essential for future steps in Karlach’s quest line and the setting up of the Infernal Mover. When the time comes again to obtain Infernal Iron, store it in the Camp Chest to ensure it is available when needed.
Where to get infernal iron
Infernal iron is relatively easy to locate, with the general area marked on the map. There are two reliable sources that tend to appear at key moments in the main story.
A simpler, less graphic option is to return to the Extinct Village. Convince the goblins to spare you, then ascend to the second floor of the house near the gate. The doorway to a cellar is just to the right, and a hidden stash awaits behind the dilapidated door.
Once inside the underground chamber, head to the top-right corner, climb a wooden set of stairs, and open a wooden chest. Inside you will find an unusual sword, a note, and a cache of infernal iron.
The second possible source is the leprechaun camp near the Broken Shrine. Enter directly and bypass every dialogue check to speed the process along.
Along the way, two leaders will appear. One offers a brand, while the other seeks help in a ritual to speak with a dead illithid. With discretion, a player can slip past them without confrontation.
Attention should be paid to the treasury at the far end behind a closed door. To crack it, a roll of twenty or higher is required. Bringing along a character like Astarion, who has the appropriate skill, is helpful, and blessing him with the Bless spell can be arranged by Shadowheart if possible.
Inside the treasury are enchanted items, gold, several gems, and another cache of infernal iron. Returning to Dammon completes the objective.
Afterward, the adventure continues, and Dammon asks for time to consider the full repair of the mechanism. The next meeting with him occurs later in Baldur’s Gate.
