Valencia Community Museums Consortium in Alicante hosts an Open Studios event this Friday where projects selected in the 2023 Cultura Resident artistic production residency are developed. The gathering runs from 18:00 to 21:00 and is free with pre-registration to the coordinators of the four projects. The event showcases a range of artistic languages including fashion, digital art, performing arts, and architecture.
During the open studio, short presentations take place beside the residences. Residents reveal their work processes through installations and inter-expert talks, sharing how projects come together and discussing the materials and outcomes involved in Resident Culture.
Open Studios highlights the creative process and the outcomes of all work produced at the Cultura Resident residences, offering a chance to evaluate the quality and distinctive voice of the creators. The Cultura Resident program was launched by the Consorci de Museus in 2017 as a pioneering regional art residency initiative with substantial scale and favorable conditions. “They are residents,” notes José Luis Pérez Pont, director of the Consorci de Museus and Center del Carme.
Four production projects in Las Cigarreras
In the November 2022 decision, four production projects were chosen to be developed at Las Cigarreras in Alicante. Alum, Alum, Alum linked to Android Mane (Andrea Martínez Fernández) and The Seven Political Allegories of Pílbara connected to Studio of Greatness will be developed over four months under the leadership of Jorge Valiente Oriol and Amaia Sánchez Velasco. Additionally Echo Positions linked to Lauren Moffatt and Twice linked to moh studio (Conchi Rodríguez Martínez) receive two months for the residency.
- Twice by Möh Studio (Conchi Rodríguez Martínez) is presented in Box S1 at 18:00. It explores a game-inspired fashion collection and its role in human development and culture. The costumes draw on fabrics sourced from an old local fabric factory. The display references the closure of that facility in the 1990s when production moved overseas.

At 18:45, Alum, Alum, Alum by Android Mane (Andrea Martínez) in Box S2 presents the third episode of a series of stage projects. The work draws on visual compositions and texts to address time, violence, internet impact, privacy erosion, social events, and the daily sense of looming disaster. Pets such as dogs, cats, and goldfish appear as witnesses to civilization, sharing a home with the artists. The Open Studio will feature the main stage installation, along with lighting, audiovisual components, and sound adjustments. Additional models of other scenarios, various audiovisual materials, costumes, important objects, and a mental map of the creative process will be shown. The artist reflects on experimenting with different rhythms and discovering the suit that best fits this guesthouse process.

At 19:30, the Grandeza Studio team, led by Jorge Valiente Oriol and Amaia Sánchez Velasco, presents The Seven Political Allegories of Pílbara. This project participated in the 18th Venice Biennale Architettura 2023 under the theme Laboratory of the Future, curated by architect Lesley Lokko. It examines an artistic-architectural research project that, in light of the energy paradigm shift starting in Australia in 2021, uses the Pilbara region as a reference to challenge exploitative and colonial myths linked to globalization and climate collapse. The creators emphasize the essential role of cultural and arts support mechanisms for democracy and the standards required by such a high-profile event.

Echo Positions linked to Lauren Moffatt explores Caixa Zero and an external garden. It uses video game techniques and augmented reality to examine intelligent systems and overlooked urban entities from a broader viewpoint. The project expands the use of new technologies to visualize these beings in shared urban spaces. Moffatt notes that the Alicante context has influenced adjustments in the project, including mobility in the city to study bat life, especially in the airspace above. The work aims to share insights Friday through visuals and demonstrations.
