November 2022 new car sales in Russia, according to AEB

The Association of European Businesses released results for November 2022, noting figures that exclude data from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Chery. Although Chery is often near the top in other reports, in this instance the focus shifts away from that brand for the headline. The report, prepared with input from Avtostat, is the basis for several observations about market dynamics in Russia during the month.

According to the AEB, overall new-car sales in Russia declined by 61.6 percent year over year, shedding 74,563 units compared with November 2021. A total of 46,403 cars were registered in the country in November 2022. This drop underscores a market adjusting to broader economic conditions and supply considerations that affected consumer demand and production activity.

Among domestic brands, Russian-made cars dominated consumer choice. The two top spots were claimed by Lada models. Lada Granta led with 13,015 units sold, while Lada Niva followed with 6,898 units. Both results show significant growth versus the same month a year earlier, with Granta moving from 7,231 and Niva from 3,618, illustrating a rebound in popularity for longstanding local models.

In third place a foreign brand takes the stage. This time the Haval Jolion crossover, a 2021 model, ranked third with 2,021 units sold in November 2022, a slight decline from 2,340 in November 2021. The shift highlights the evolving mix of imports and the relative strength of Chinese branding in the Russian market during the period.

If Chery had remained in the AEB tally, observers believe the Tiggo 7 Pro could have contended for a higher position, given that 2,134 cars were registered in October. Autostat data position Chery behind AVTOVAZ for November 2022, with 5,537 Chery vehicles reported, indicating notable but varying readings between sources for the same period. The top five also included Geely Coolray and Haval F7, both showing increased sales year over year.

Notably, Chinese brands occupied five of the ten top spots. UAZ Patriot sat in eighth, continuing a trend of lower turnover versus the prior year. The Kia Sportage remained in the top ten despite a year-over-year decline, while Vesta faced production restart challenges that have suppressed its sales, with expectations of a return to its traditional second-place standing once production normalizes.

The Top 10 most popular new cars in Russia for November 2022, as reported by AEB, reflects a market where domestic models hold sway but imports—especially Chinese-made cars—play a growing role in consumer choices.
