Chinese brands have led the Russian car market for three consecutive weeks, according to analyses from Avtostat, referencing data provided by JSC Passport Industrial Consulting. The shift reflects a sustained preference among Russian buyers for value-focused models from Chinese manufacturers, a trend that has shaped monthly market dynamics and influenced dealer strategies across major regions.
During the period from March 6 to March 13, approximately 4.8 thousand new passenger cars of Chinese brands were sold in Russia, capturing about 39.7% of total passenger car sales. Domestic manufacturers held a strong position as well, securing a 36.4% share with around 4.4 thousand units sold. Korean-brand vehicles followed in third place, amassing 1,245 units and 10.3% of the market. These figures illustrate a competitive landscape where Chinese brands are narrowing the gap with traditional leaders and expanding their footprint across different price segments and vehicle types. Among individual brands, Lada continued to lead the market with around 4.1 thousand vehicles, corresponding to a 34.3% share. Close behind were three Chinese automakers: Chery with 1,353 units (11.2%), Haval with 1,196 units (9.9%), and Geely with 876 units (7.3%). Kia rounded out the top five with 666 units and a 5.5% share. The top ten also included Hyundai, Toyota, and UAZ, alongside two Chinese entrants, Exeed and Omoda, signaling a broader diversification among top-seller brands. The ongoing strength of Chinese brands underscores shifting consumer preferences toward newer designs, warranty terms, and feature-rich configurations that appeal to Russian buyers seeking good value for money. Within the list of the ten best-selling models in Russia, seven were Chinese, highlighting the resonance of recent Chinese introductions with local customers. Key models contributing to this mix included the Lada Granta and Lada Niva Travel from the incumbent Russian brand family, as well as Haval Jolion and Geely Coolray. Additional favorites in the segment were the Lada Niva Legend, Omoda C5, Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, Geely Atlas Pro, Chery Tiggo 7 Pro, and Haval F7x, which collectively illustrate the broad appeal of both compact and SUV-style offerings from Chinese manufacturers. This pattern reflects a combination of price sensitivity, practicality, and a growing appetite for technologically equipped vehicles in the mainstream market. Market observers note that ongoing product launches, financing options, and after-sales support will continue to influence consumer choices as both domestic and foreign brands expand their local networks.
