Kaspersky Lab experts discovered a new version of the Necro malware in popular applications available on Google Play and other platforms. This Android downloader can download and run other malicious components on an infected smartphone. This was reported to socialbites.ca by the press service of Kaspersky Lab.
Necro has the ability to load modules that display ads, download executables, install third-party applications, open arbitrary links, and execute JavaScript code. It can also offer paid subscriptions and redirect internet traffic through the victim’s device.
The affected apps were found on unofficial platforms, including a modified Spotify Plus, a modified version of WhatsApp, and games like Minecraft and Stumble Guys. The malicious downloader was also found on Google Play apps like Wuta Camera and Max Browser, which have a combined total of over 11 million downloads.
Kaspersky Lab reported the infections to Google, and the malicious code was removed from the Wuta Camera app and Max Browser from the store. However, users still face the risk of encountering Necro on unofficial sites. Necro attacks on users have already been recorded in Russia, Brazil, Vietnam, Ecuador, and Mexico.
To protect yourself from Necro and other cyber threats to Android, it is recommended that you download applications only from official sources, regularly update the operating system and installed applications, and use a reliable security solution from the manufacturer, the effectiveness of which has been confirmed by independent tests in laboratories.
