Between March 11 and March 17, 2024, the number of DDoS attacks against the travel segment in Russia increased by 138% compared to the same period last year. The press service of the StormWall company reported this to socialbites.ca.
Analysts noted that the increased interest of cybercriminals in the travel industry is due to the start of the tourist season, which replaces the winter recession. With DDoS attacks, hackers wanted to disrupt the functioning of companies’ online resources so that users could not book tours and tickets. StormWall believes politically motivated hacktivists were also involved in the attacks.
According to experts, hackers mostly use botnets to launch DDoS attacks. The largest botnet recorded by StormWall consisted of 47 thousand devices. There have also been reports of multi-vector attacks causing great damage to websites and other online resources of unprepared companies.
StormWall noted that large-scale attacks were unexpected for many companies in the travel industry. According to experts, during this period, the resources of at least one travel agency were not available to users for several hours. StormWall noted that the best way for airlines to deal with a hacker attack is to use professional DDoS protection tools.
