The twelfth edition of the modern era in the federal competition will feature two clubs that have never claimed the title in a final before.

The Argentinian Cup has a history split into two phases: the early period at the end of the 1960s, with a complete edition and another that lacked a decisive match; and a second phase that has run continuously since 2011, though with a temporary pause. The 2020 edition began but was interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic and later resumed, extending into 2021 and pushing the final, where Boca Juniors defeated Talleres, to nearly two years after the tournament began.

In 2022, amid the post-pandemic adjustments and a calendar reshaped by the World Cup, there was an unprecedented final and Protection became the first champion indirectly affiliated with the AFA. And 2023 is poised to deliver a new winner as the final will be contested by Students, with the victor among San Lorenzo and Defense and Justice — three clubs that had never won the competition before.

1969

The inaugural edition of the competition qualified for the South American Cup Winners’ Cup and was the only one played in two legs. Boca Juniors prevailed over Club Atlético Atlanta with an overall 3-2 score (they won 3-1 at home and lost 0-1 away). The tournament continued the following year, but after the continental tournament’s second edition was cancelled and a place was awarded, the decision was made to suspend the dispute, even though San Lorenzo and Vélez Sársfield had already played the first leg of the tournament’s last edition.

2012

After more than four decades, the AFA chose to revive a National Cup of federal character, held annually, with Boca Juniors defeating Racing 2-1 in the first edition after the restoration.

2013

Arsenal defeated San Lorenzo 3-0 to become champions.

2014

2015

Boca Juniors beat Rosario Central 2-0 amid controversy surrounding refereeing by Diego Ceballos, earning their third title in the competition.

2016

River Plate defeated Rosario Central 4-3 in a dramatic match to win the Argentine Cup for the first time.

2017

River Plate defeated Atlético Tucumán 2–1 in Mendoza to defend the title.

2018

In a tough duel against Gimnasia y Esgrima, after a 1-1 draw in regulation, Rosario Central triumphed 4-1 on penalties and finally cleared the slump of several near-misses from previous years.

2019

River Plate defeated Central Córdoba from Santiago del Estero 3–0 in Mendoza, becoming Argentine Cup champions for the third time, tying Boca Juniors on the all-time list.

2020-21

The 2020 edition was paused for nine months due to the pandemic and was scheduled to conclude the following year. Boca Juniors and Talleres drew 0-0 in Santiago del Estero, and the result went to penalties, where Boca emerged 5-4 winners and claimed the title.

2022

On Sunday, October 30, Patronato won 1-0 against Talleres in Mendoza thanks to a goal by Tiago Banega, making Patronato the first team indirectly affiliated with the AFA to become champions. (Source: Goal)
