El Negro sits on one of the most talked-about benches in South American football, and presently his numbers are turning heads.

Hugo Ibarra took charge of Boca Juniors’ first team after the club parted ways with Sebastian Battaglia following a Libertadores setback. He made his debut on July 9 in the clásico against San Lorenzo at the Nuevo Gasómetro. The match ended 2-1 in favor of San Lorenzo, amid tensions inside the Boca squad.

Two days later, Jorge Amor Ameal publicly backed him through the end of the year: “The coaching staff led by Ibarra will stay until the end of the year. We are very pleased with the work of our people,” said the president during a press conference attended by Jorge Bermúdez and the coaching staff Roberto Pompeii and Leandro Gracian.

After a rough spell away from home that featured three defeats and a draw, Boca managed a 1-0 victory over Defensa y Justicia in Florencio Varela. That win sparked a five-match winning streak that elevated the team to its highest point, including a 1-0 win in the Superclásico thanks to a goal from Darío Benedetto. The run paused with a 0-0 draw at La Bombonera against Huracán, but Boca returned to attacking form and added another five wins, four in the league and one in the Copa Argentina.

The 2-0 defeat to Newell’s in the 2022 league season ended a 15-match unbeaten run, yet the coach redeemed himself with a victory over Gimnasia that secured his first title as a First Division manager.

When does Boca play?

In the Argentine Cup, Boca was eliminated by Patronato after a 1-1 semi-final draw, preventing a deeper cup run during that campaign.

From a statistical standpoint, Boca Juniors played 29 matches under Ibarra, recording 16 wins, six draws (one decided on penalties) and seven losses. The team scored 32 goals and conceded 25, while maintaining 13 clean sheets.
