Among all the national competitions held in Argentina from 1891 to today, Boca Juniors stands out by one margin and leads the all-time rankings.

Although attempts have been made to erase the early decades with ink and debate, Argentine football preserves one of the richest and longest histories in the world. Active since 1891 and with a continuous league since 1893, the First Division Championship is the oldest ongoing league competition on the planet. National cups trace their lineage to the 1900 Tie Cup, a time when multiple tournaments were staged on Creole soil, even before a central federation organized the sport here.

All national cup champions in the history of Argentine football

Over the decades, club dominance shifted, reshaping records and legends. From Lomas Athletic to Alumni, then the rise of a broader identity—the First Big One—and later the era of two giants, Boca Juniors and River Plate, whose supremacy endures to this day.

By the mid-1940s, Boca Juniors reached the Academy in total titles and, after a 20-year period of alternating championships, in 1969 River Plate surpassed their archrival as the most successful club for 22 years. River held that lead until Boca reclaimed it in 1991 and extended its dominance again in 1993.

River Plate remained atop the list for years, until Boca matched the tally in 2020 when the Diego Maradona Cup crowned their latest triumph. Since then, River accumulated more titles, yet Boca tied the record again with the 2022 Professional League title.

After narrowly missing another solitary lead due to losses in the Champions Trophy and the International Super Cup, Boca once again surpassed its rival in the tally of national titles by defeating Patronato 3-0 in the Argentine Super Cup, bringing the total to 52 titles.

Next, GOAL surveys the table of clubs with the most Argentine football titles, considering both first division championships and national cups.
