“I am incredibly happy that although the disease cannot be cured, it is at least in remission and I can continue performing. The former skater said he became disabled at the age of 43. Now Slutskaya is 44 years old.
Slutskaya won gold medals at two world championships in 2002 and 2006. The Russian woman climbed to the top step of the podium at the European Championships seven times. She won the silver medal at the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002, losing only to Sarah Hughes of the USA. At the Turin Olympics in 2006, Slutskaya took third place.
In August 2015, a figure skating school named after Irina Slutskaya was opened in the town of Lytkarino near Moscow.
