Scientists of the 70th Russian Antarctic Expedition of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute have installed at the Antarctic Vostok station a modern meteorological complex capable of operating in extreme conditions of the coldest continent on the planet. This equipment will collect data on weather, snow cover and solar activity around the clock, helping to better understand climate change on Earth. Opening announced Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI).
Antarctica is a region that affects the climate of the entire planet, including Russia. Information collected at the Vostok station will help predict weather, analyze natural disasters, and study Earth’s climatic history.
“Meteorological data from Antarctica is important not only for weather forecasting, but also for understanding the global processes that shape the climate across the planet,” said Igor Idrisov, the expedition’s chief meteorologist.
The complex allows you to measure temperature, air humidity, wind strength and direction even in the harshest conditions of Antarctica. It also analyzes solar activity, snowfall intensity and longwave radiation, including the polar night. Data is collected four times per second, providing an incredibly accurate picture of what’s going on. The devices, which record the slightest temperature changes at 10, 2 and 0.5 meters above the ground, eliminate all kinds of errors thanks to special methods for measuring wind.
The information collected is processed using modern technologies, including artificial intelligence. This allows not only more accurate predictions but also the basis for new scientific discoveries.
