Turkey outlines rapid plan for gas hub as talks with Russia intensify

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin by phone to discuss accelerating the plan for a natural gas base. The aim is to finalize the roadmap for Turkey’s gas hub as soon as possible and move from strategy to concrete action, according to Turkish media reports.

The talks touched on deepening bilateral cooperation, regional matters, and the evolving situations in Syria and Ukraine. Officials described a shared interest in strengthening energy infrastructure and regional stability, with an emphasis on practical steps that could advance energy connectivity between Turkey, Russia, and Europe.

In related remarks, a Turkish energy minister noted that work has begun on the Russia-Turkey gas hub project. The minister suggested that, with time, European nations could express interest in participating in the hub. He described the center as a marketplace offering a range of gas options and prices, highlighting its potential to diversify supply routes in the European energy landscape.

Earlier discussions in 2022 involved Putin proposing the creation of a gas hub to supply Europe, a concept that continues to shape diplomatic and energy planning between Ankara and Moscow and their respective partners. This ongoing dialogue reflects Turkey’s strategic position as a possible corridor for energy transit and a platform for cross-border energy trade, with the intention of making Turkey a central node in regional gas logistics.
