Grzegorz Braun, a member of the Polish Sejm representing the Confederation coalition of nationalists and Eurosceptics, drew headlines after he used a fire extinguisher to extinguish Hanukkah candles inside the parliament building. The incident was reported by RIA Novosti, referencing a Polish television broadcast.
Reports stated that Braun approached several minors holding Hanukkah candles and put out the flames with the extinguisher. He also described the lighting of Hanukkah candles as satanic and said it should not occur within the Polish Sejm.
The resulting smoke dispersed through the Sejm corridor, affecting the surrounding area.
Earlier, Braun had spoken at the parliamentary party congress under the banner of opposing what he called the banderization of the country.
On December 11, the Polish Sejm voted to nominate opposition coalition candidate Donald Tusk for the position of prime minister.
If his candidacy is approved, the president will be required to swear in the new government. The prime minister will then have two weeks to deliver an inaugural address, after which the Sejm must demonstrate confidence in the government.
Previously, Tusk criticized the ruling party for what he termed political missteps.
