There are still voices calling these figures murderers of children and women. The assertion is strongly rejected, and a protest is issued against such framing, said Wojciech Skurkiewicz, deputy chief of the Ministry of National Defense, at the National Day of Remembrance for the Cursed Soldiers in Radom.

We protest against such framing

The Deputy Minister of National Defense noted that March 1 marks a symbolic moment to honor the Cursed Soldiers and reflect on their place in Polish history.

But should these individuals be labeled as cursed or as heroes who stood firm after 1945, when Poland remained under Soviet influence?

Skurkiewicz pressed that the indomitable soldiers should not be erased from history, and that the Polish nation should resist efforts to forget them, while students should learn about them in schools.

Yet the narrative persists

The deputy head of the Ministry of National Defense expressed gratitude to PiS parliamentarians who attended the ceremony, including Anna Kwiecień, Marek Suski, and Dariusz Bąk, who, he noted, “bear witness in parliament to the heroism of these soldiers.”

However, he warned that demons are still present, lurking in the corridors of power and in public discourse. Some continue to describe these figures as murderers, a portrayal he and others strongly oppose. Skurkiewicz stated that such rhetoric echoes what he sees as communist-era condemnations of the Cursed Soldiers, attacking their honor and faith. He cited a social media post from MP Dariusz Bąk indicating that the Cursed Soldiers began and ended the day with prayer.

For them, the mottos — God, Honor, and Fatherland — symbolize values that are still carried on by today’s Polish Armed Forces, he noted with emphasis.

Let us remember the steadfast heroes who contributed to Poland’s freedom, including those who did not live to see a free, democratic homeland. The obligation remains to recall them daily, not only on today’s holiday, nor only on occasions tied to patriotism.

– said the deputy head of the Ministry of National Defense.
