Following a decision by PiS President Jarosław Kaczyński, Law and Justice announced a PLN 250,000 grant to aid flood victims. PiS Club President Mariusz Błaszczak argued that the government’s reconstruction plan proposed by Prime Minister Donald Tusk was insufficient and presented a PiS package that would cover reconstruction costs in full.

Project to help flood victims

At a press briefing, members of Law and Justice introduced a bill aimed at aiding communities hit by floods. The package envisions a dedicated fund to mitigate flood damage and to cover up to 98 percent of replacement costs for local government investments. MPs also seek non-refundable emergency aid exceeding PLN 24,000 for each affected person. Officials emphasized tight oversight and a clear accounting trail to ensure taxpayers can see where funds are going and how costs are determined.

The plan also guarantees full, 100 percent support for rebuilding buildings. The PiS club president noted that expert assessments and independent appraisers would guide the process to maintain transparency so the public understands which costs stem from the disaster and which arise from other factors.

Meeting at the offices of PiS MPs

To start, Mariusz Błaszczak thanked all supporters of flood victims. A donation drive had been underway since Sunday at parliamentary and senatorial offices in support of Law and Justice.

The relief effort in the Lower Silesia region was coordinated by MP Paweł Hreniak, while the Opole region relief was led by MP Marcin Ociepa, according to remarks from the former Minister of National Defense.

A quarter of a million to help the wounded through Caritas

A portion of the funds will be channeled through Caritas to assist the victims, after discussions with the party leader. The plan allocates PLN 250,000 to support those affected. Błaszczak noted criticisms of the government’s relief levels, arguing the current sums do not enable meaningful rebuilding. He also referenced events at the National Electoral Commission on December 13 and stressed that Polish generosity allowed fundraising to proceed, with part of the collected money directed to the victims.

As Błaszczak stated, the financial support proposed by the government for reconstruction of flood-damaged buildings is insufficient. He described the overall package as aiming to provide real, tangible help rather than symbolic amounts, noting that the funds would be distributed with accountability and oversight.

Extra leave

The proposal also includes provisions for additional leave for those injured and for rescue workers, along with support for entrepreneurs similar to past relief funds used during the pandemic. Zbigniew Kuźmiuk urged the Speaker of the Sejm to call a meeting soon to discuss the matter in detail.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that flood victims can count on emergency aid of PLN 10,000, with up to PLN 100,000 available for apartment renovations or the reconstruction of utility rooms and up to PLN 200,000 for other repairs.
