The head of the Ministry of Interior and Administration, Marcin Kierwiński, confirmed that the audit into the grenade launcher explosion at the police headquarters will deliver findings in February. He asserted that there were early signs of attempts to mask the issue and that the new police leadership had asked that the formation, rather than the former commander, receive injured party status in the case.
During a broadcast on TVP Info, Kierwiński spoke about the audit concerning the firing of a grenade launcher into the office of the Chief Police Commander.
The central questions guiding the audit are: what happened after the grenade launcher exploded? Who participated in any cover-up, and how was it carried out? Why was the case against General Szymczyk not forwarded to the prosecutor’s office?
– Kierwiński noted.
He added that the new police authorities had already asked for the formation to be granted injured party status in the case, rather than the former commander.
The minister emphasized that the investigation would provide reliable answers to these questions. It is now clear, he stressed, that there were attempts to sweep the matter under the rug.
The Internal Affairs Bureau of the police, responsible for investigating irregularities, said it was not involved in the case.
– Kierwiński pointed out that the former commander should apologize for harming the police’s image.
General Szymczyk is described as an extremely compromised figure
– Kierwiński added.
Local government elections
Kierwiński of the PO stated that he has always supported a broad pro-democracy front and was asked about the upcoming local elections. He argued that victory in these elections would reinforce the perception that the PiS era has ended.
The PO politician was questioned on TVP Info about the possibility of a united, broad coalition front for the local elections.
“I have always favored a broad front that unites all pro-democratic groups.”
Kierwiński noted that the most likely scenario for the elections involves two blocs. He referenced Trzecia Droga-PSL, the party of Szymon Hołownia, and the Civic Coalition, potentially allied with the left. He suggested these blocs could propel a decisive win for pro-democratic forces
– He said.
He added that this victory would further support the view that the times of PiS are over.
On Thursday, leaders from Poland 2050 and PSL – Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and Szymon Hołownia – announced plans to form a joint election committee for assemblies, provinces, and municipalities. Negotiations were also under way between the Civic Coalition and the New Left regarding a joint start in local elections. Prime Minister Donald Tusk had previously announced that local elections would take place on April 7 and 21.
Sienkiewicz’s defense
Kierwiński also affirmed support for Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz.
“Yes, I have full confidence in these decisions by Minister Sienkiewicz, because I know they are legal. Each owner has the right to liquidate the company he owns, and here TVP or Polskie Radio, as commercial law entities, are not subject to any other regulations.”
Kierwiński described court decisions as imprudent, arguing that the matters involved political appointments. He suggested that the legal system includes many political appointees who lack the power of PiS and make several imprudent calls. He added that courts would decide whether the registrar’s refusal to register was appropriate.
– He said.
As observed, court decisions hold little sway for KO politicians. Tribal allegiance, in his view, appears to outweigh norms. He chided the notion that these figures pose as guardians of standards.
