Civic Platform appears to be signaling a sense of urgency about its position, as outlined in an interview with Polsat News by the party’s General Secretary Marcin Kierwiński. He indicates that Poland currently experiences a form of quasi-democracy, but he warns that if PiS secures victory in the elections, there may be no free elections in Poland and the country could lose its membership in the European Union. This warning was voiced during the program Graffiti.
“PiS quasi-democracy”
As Civic Platform approached the end of its time in government, a satirical sketch circulated in which members of Donald Tusk’s administration threatened one another with possible scenarios should PiS return to power. Kierwiński’s recollection of this sketch suggests a belief that the political climate inside PO has shifted toward invoking such themes, even if the seriousness of applying them in everyday politics is questionable.
In the Polsat News interview, the opposition figure touched on several points, including the period before Donald Tusk’s leadership.
Recent railway incidents have raised concerns in the public sphere. Questions have emerged about the involvement of individuals connected to law enforcement and whether any orders guided their actions. The public seeks clarity on what actually transpired.
The former prime minister was cited on social media in this context.
Kierwiński argued that there is no genuine democracy in Poland as things stand.
There is a desire to determine whether the current state results from governmental negligence, incompetence, or perhaps deliberate provocation. The opposition wants transparency and information. He stressed that in a country described as democratic in theory, the reality under PiS does not reflect true democracy.
According to Kierwiński, the main fault lies in the role of public television and its influence on the political process.
He described this as a PiS quasi-democracy, where the ruling party appears more likely to win elections. He underscored the importance of the October 15 vote and expressed strong opposition to the status quo.
Giertych’s candidacy
In the broader conversation about autumn elections, Kierwiński mentioned Roman Giertych joining the Civic Coalition lists. He noted that this was a decision made personally by Donald Tusk and called it an interesting tactical move.
According to Kierwiński, broad support is needed to remove PiS from power. He also announced that a primary topic for the coalition after the election would be the abortion law, calling for changes to the anti-women legislation introduced by PiS to be determined by women rather than by political figures in Żoliborz.
The question remains what new viewpoints Roman Giertych might bring to the debate. Kierwiński added that the situation in Poland extends beyond reproductive policy, pointing to a broader sense of emergency marked by strong public concern.
If PiS wins, Kierwiński warned, the discussions about quasi-democracy and free elections would be moot, with Poland possibly outside the European Union.
“A major threat to the state”
Interestingly, Kierwiński pointed to a segment in which an AI-generated voice of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki reads emails allegedly leaked from Minister Dworczyk’s mailbox. The question remains whether the prime minister accepts the authenticity of these emails, a topic that has dominated coverage for some time. Questions about what information has been leaked, who received it, and whether any laws were violated by those involved have persisted for years. The role of artificial intelligence in this context also drew scrutiny.
He emphasized that the central issue is the reliability of the emails. While the opposition has accused the government of misusing technology to misrepresent facts, Kierwiński insisted that the truth about the prime minister should be clear. The discourse has produced a sharp critique of leadership, with some comparing Morawiecki to a recurring character in political satire while others challenge the broader integrity of the political class and its institutions.
There has been internal controversy about the past statements from Kierwiński’s own circle, including debates over reforms such as retirement age and taxation policies.
