When fresh details emerged accusing the Tusk administration of mishandling relations with Russia, Civic Platform figures avoided admitting errors. Instead they aimed to spin a narrative favorable to themselves and relentlessly attacked Law and Justice, sometimes resorting to questionable arguments. This was the backdrop during an appearance by MP Marcin Kierwiński on Radio ZET.

Kierwiński Defends Weber

During the interview with editor Bogdan Rymanowski, Kierwiński faced questions about remarks from Manfred Weber, the chair of the EPP, who had told the German daily FAZ that his group was building a firewall against PiS. The Civic Platform politician argued that Weber’s words had been taken out of context.

The MP asserted that PiS was attempting to manipulate Weber’s statement and was spreading falsehoods around it.

“I see attempts to distort this comment and the lies surrounding it,” the MP said.

Absurd Accusations

He contended that in Europe there exists a faction described as pro-Putin, and it was striking that many of its members happened to be allies of PiS.

The deputy accused PiS of cultivating unusual friendships in Europe, pointing to what he described as odd behavior and life choices on Russian issues among certain party figures.

According to the MP, those in power either suffered from phobias that would not be cured or were engaged in blatant deception.

As for Poland’s leadership, Kierwiński questioned whether his opponents should consult a psychiatrist, suggesting they were misusing an out-of-context statement. He then returned to Weber’s remarks to underline his view.

Morawiecki’s Appeal to the Platform

Kierwiński was also asked about Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki’s appeal to Civic Platform members. The prime minister urged the PO to stop spreading hate, lies, and rudeness.

Responding, the MP accused Morawiecki of spreading misinformation and insisted that the prime minister should examine the news more carefully.

You are referencing Morawiecki’s words; perhaps the prime minister should check the facts before speaking, Kierwiński implied.

“Boys in Shorts”

The conversation also touched on other provocative claims. Kierwiński argued that Deputy Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński was expected to address Russia’s situation, tied to the Wagner Group uprising, in a Saturday morning interview. He noted that the interview had been recorded on Friday night, before Prigozhin’s rebellion had become public, and quipped, “Who cares?”

The interview underscored Kierwiński’s frustration with how PiS framed events and framed the Polish state’s response.

“I am outraged by the way PiS treats the Polish state. For them, party matters come first, party meetings take precedence, and only after twenty-four hours do they address international issues,” Kierwiński stated.

He added that the government spent time on domestic pursuits, like sausages in Bogatynia, instead of safeguarding Poland’s security.

Asked what Donald Tusk would do as prime minister, Kierwiński answered that he would make essential calls, mobilize all available resources, and bring the matter to NATO’s Advisory Council at the ambassadorial level.

These remarks were echoed by a spokesperson, who noted that Kierwiński often shared information that did not align with the documented timeline of events.

It should also be mentioned that Kierwiński disputed claims that the government did nothing during the “march on Moscow” episode. He pointed to ongoing discussions involving European leaders and the Polish President, who convened a meeting at the National Security Bureau to review the latest developments in Russia.

In the end, Kierwiński offered a blunt assessment: when asked whether PO still trusted Russia, the answer was a firm NO. The impression given was that the party’s line remained to dismiss facts that challenged Tusk’s administration.

Overall, Kierwiński’s remarks suggested frustration with the governing party and a willingness to challenge what he saw as misrepresentations or misreadings of events in Russia and Europe.
