In a rallying stand, Sovereign Poland urged Civic Platform and Donald Tusk to demand an apology from Manfred Weber and to insist that he refrain from meddling in Poland’s elections. The message came during a press conference led by Deputy Ministers Sebastian Kaleta and Jan Kanthak.

The party articulated a plan that rejects radical elements. It identified the AfD and Marine Le Pen as political adversaries. The stance included three conditions for any future cooperation: commitments to Europe, to Ukraine, and to the rule of law. This framework, according to Sovereign Poland, constructs a shield against PiS and positions the group as the primary challenger to PiS in Poland, intending to steer the country back toward European alignment.

These thoughts were attributed to Manfred Weber, described as the head of the European People’s Party group in the European Parliament, in an interview designated to a major newspaper. The remarks were cited as a catalyst for the call from Sovereign Poland.

Call from Sovereign Poland

Sovereign Poland leaders reframed the discussion as a matter of sovereignty, urging Civic Platform and Donald Tusk to apologize to Weber and to stop any interference in Poland’s upcoming elections this year.

Sebastian Kaleta, deputy head of the Justice Department, spoke at the press conference, emphasizing that the situation mirrors past episodes in which German officials were perceived as meddling in other domestic affairs.

Kaleta noted a parallel with Italy, where Weber’s partner and fellow German politician had previously commented in a patronizing manner about potential outcomes in Italy. The Italian political landscape subsequently criticized such intervention in their electoral process, according to Kaleta.

Questioning whether Donald Tusk would muster the resolve to contest his German patrons, Kaleta suggested the appeal was necessary despite lingering doubts about the response.

“Explicit German option”

Another Sovereign Poland figure, Jan Kanthak, the deputy head of the MAP, remarked that the masks had fallen. Historically, Civic Platform had been described as a concealed German option. Weber’s remarks allegedly exposed an open German option, Kanthak asserted.

Kanthak reflected on the possibility of a reset with Russia and raised the question of whether a future alliance with Germany, including discussions about reparations, might emerge. He weighed the current political moment and argued that sovereignty supporters, now part of the United Right, should maintain power to ensure continued democratic governance in Poland.

Meanwhile, Donald Tusk’s camp was depicted as eager to relinquish that power, according to Kanthak.

Marcin Kierwiński, secretary general of PiS, had previously criticized Weber’s statement on Radio Zet, saying PiS saw attempts to maneuver and misrepresent the remark. The broader context, as presented, suggested a European landscape where a faction aligned with Putin was believed to be operating, a characterization that linked certain actors with PiS.
