The remarks came today as Stanisław Żaryn, State Secretary at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, commented on the functioning of the secret services and their financial impact. He noted that since the establishment of the Central Bureau of Anti-C Corruption (CBA), officials have identified activities that harmed the public purse, totaling more than 18 million złoty, a figure he described during an interview with PAP Studio.
What lies ahead for the secret services?
When queried about the future of Poland’s special services under the new leadership, including the Prime Ministerial appointment of the heads from parties such as KO, Third Way, and Left Coalition, Stanisław Żaryn, who serves as Deputy Minister overseeing Special Services, expressed a hope that the agency would continue to operate in its current capacity. He stated that the functions of the services remain aligned with national interests, even amid leadership changes.
He added that the present team has assessed the services differently and proposed dissolving the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau. Żaryn argued that such a view stems from a lack of full understanding and from observing the process from the outside, not from firsthand engagement with ongoing activities.
The services have evolved significantly over the past eight years
Żaryn asserted that as the new team enters the agencies, proper scrutiny of past decisions and actions will help them understand what occurred, what decisions were made, and what actions followed. He suggested that while some outcomes may not be praised, others need to be continued, because the service has indeed changed a great deal over the years.
He reflected that the agenda of the services has shifted in recent years in response to new challenges and threats. He also mentioned a growing emphasis on anti-corruption work within the European Union, highlighted by a draft EU directive proposing the existence of anti-corruption bodies in every EU member state.
Since the CBA’s creation, officials have identified activities detrimental to the public purse amounting to more than 18 million złoty. This figure is specific and independent of any single political climate; it reflects actions that serve the Polish state. Żaryn noted that, thanks to the CBA’s recommendations, institutions involved in various procurement and public contracts were able to achieve savings surpassing 860 million złoty, opportunities realized when the CBA’s guidance was implemented successfully.
